water going up hose

Post by sonny » Tue Jan 03, 2006 2:35 pm

I have an REMstar to which I've added a heated humidifer, and now I get water up the hose during the night. The humidifer is below head level as suggested in the manual, and I keep the water level no higher than the level marked on the humidifier. I've been using a humidity setting of 2. I'm using the Breeze Sleep Gear. How do I keep the water from coming up the hose?

From the CPAPopedia-- the blue book icon at the top of this page:

Rainout is when you are using a heated humidifier and start getting water in your hose. It's caused by the steamy air coming from the humidifier at a higher temperature than the surrounding room air, so it cools on the way to the mask. While it leaves the humidifier as "humid air" when it cools, it reaches the mask as "water" and you get a damp face.

People use a heated hose or a hose cover to help resolve this problem, or turn the heater on the humidifier down so that it is closer to room temperature.

Wish I knew who the Guest was.
Very creative answer, but not quite right.

Water does not "come up" the hose as long as the law of gravity is still working.
NO "steamy" air comes from the humidifier- actually, it could be considered with enough imagination.
It comes off as VAPOR and is condensed by the cooler air to steam-

sonny, the Aussie heated hose at the link the Guest provided is the very best solution of all, imho:

I've been using that heated hose for over a year. It works great!

As indicated, the definition came from the CPAPopedia.

I have had the Heated Hose noe for a few months. I don't know how I did it without it and will never go a night without it again.
