Apnea and ED for the over 60-ish
Apnea and ED for the over 60-ish
Look, I'm new at this, and I think I may have this apnea thing you all are talking about.
This is a little embarrassing, but .........
To you men out there ---- does this sleep apnea cause ED in those like me who are over 60? (I prefer to think of it as aging well, like a fine wine... or a fermenting cheese?) Or am I just getting old, not sleeping well, and er, uh, not sleeping well?
I've read somewhere that there might be a connection.
I got the snoring, I got the sleepies during the day a lot, and I sometimes get headaches. I do nod off a lot and feel like a zombie sometimes.
But I just figured it was all due to my love life and lack there of, where my mind is willing but my body is not. I know, I know, I need to go to a doctor. But could ED be a symptom? It's not just me getting old?
Much obliged.

Ok, dont want to get into too much detail, but I have noticed things have improved for me quite a bit since I got on the hose. I can't say I have had anything like ED, but I am just saying I have noticed quite a difference.
When something like Apnea can affect someone at my age, when that is what many consider defines someone in their lower 20s, you know its a serious issue
Id get things checked out, in my little experience, I have found that if you are seeing noticable symptoms, there are likely other things you do not even realize since you have delt with them for so long, that could be improved.
The analogy I have heard is like people who need glasses, generally your eyesight goes so gradually that you do not realize you are missing out on things until you REALLY can't see. Same thing when your sleep is getting worse and worse. But once you put those glasses (CPAP) on, you really see what was wrong. Wow, skipping a night really makes my mind wander and makes me ramble, sorry about that folks.

ED caused from many things
PAP therapy can definitely perk things up, but it takes a couple
of months to feel the results. Also, using the Testosterone gel
on your shoulders can make a big difference. There is good
research showing that if you don't sleep well, you don't produce
testosterone. Have your blood level of testosterone checked.

Erectile dysfunction in sleep apnea and response to CPAP
This post and my reply are from http://www.apneasupport.org:
Department of Psychiatry, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas 77030, USA.
This study assessed characteristics of sexual dysfunction in sleep apnea and the efficacy of treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Twenty-two men with sleep apnea syndrome and also sexual dysfunction served as subjects in this study. Tests included physical, psychological, neurological, and penile vascular examinations, along with polysomnography, nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT), and penile rigidity. All patients clinically had a history of snoring and difficulty getting and maintaining erections. Results indicate that erectile dysfunction in patients with sleep apnea could be related to patient's age and chronic cerebral hypoxia due to apnea. Treatment with CPAP relieved erectile dysfunction in one-third of these patients.
PMID: 8789505 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]
My reply:
"This is very interesting!
I noticed a decided improvement in my "love life" after several months on my CPAP. Although I attributed it to just being more well rested, it appears that there was more going on here than I realized.
Not to be too indelicate here, but the return of my morning "pee erections," and much firmer and longer lasting erections during intercourse have been a source of great joy for me.
Hooray for CPAP!"

I've heard several accounts that cpap therapy relieves ED.
Cpap therapy can restore much of your health, and certainly sexual health is part of that, for men and women. I'm a woman posting this time, and I can tell you that not only men find such improvement with cpap therapy. I don't know if it's physiology or mental or what. With untreated apnea I lost interest in everything, everything. Thanks to cpap, I feel more normal again. Get two newly-treated apnea people together --- look out! If cpap improves your health, it helps many areas of your life.
