Encore Pro installation problem resolved!
Encore Pro installation problem resolved!
As many of you will have read in her thread, Fifi and I have been struggling for the past few days to get Encore Pro running on her computer. Each time she would get a message:
"Unable to Load MSDE successfully Please Contact Respironics For Support."
and of course we all know that Respironics will not assist end-users.
I'm pleased to report that we have fixed the problem It is not documented anywhere in the Encore Pro instructions, so I will outline it here in case others have the same problem.
It turns out that in order for the Microsoft SQL Desktop Server (MSDE) to install and function in Windows XP you must have File and Printer Sharing enabled in your networking set-up. This is an option that you set up when you configure your computer for networking and, although it may seem strange, it makes sense when you understand how a SQL server works.
If you have this problem when installing, go to
Settings -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connection
and click the Properties... item under the General tab. On the next window, in the box under the General tab you should see a checked item "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks"
If it is not there you must install it as follows:
1) Click the Install... button.
2) On the next window click on Service to highlight it, then click the Add... button.
3) On the next window click on File and Printer Sharing and OK
This should do it, and you should now be able to install Encore Pro.
Good luck.

When I tried installing the Encore Pro 1.8 software, I got almost this exact same message, except instead it said "MSDE installer encountered an error, contact customer service."
I tried the suggestion offered here and it didn't work. I tried downloading MSDE separately and installing it. That didn't work either.
Any other suggestions?
After that, I tried the custom install and just installed the Encore Pro, but not the database.
Can just the Encore Pro software be used without the database?

You didn't say which OS (operating system) you were running (XP or Vista).
The database software SHOULD install from the Encore Pro CD.
I'd suggest uninstalling everything related to Encore Pro and starting over. You also have to have Administrative rights (which you SHOULD already have). If you're running Vista, I've heard it can be a bit tricky.

And, contrary to what Derek wrote in his post, I've always had my "File and Printer Sharing" turned off (long before Encore Pro) and never had any problems installing mine with it that way.
I just followed the directions and installed it from the Encore Pro CD and everything worked. I DID have a (Respironics) CD that came with the reader (since I purchased the package from CPAP.COM) and did use that to install the reader, but there's also the same software on the Encore Pro disk to do the reader install.
Good luck.

Error Message on install
Hi folks,
I had a similar error message the first time I tried to install EncorePro. I got another copy from a different source and the second time it installed perfectly with no difference in what I did!
Over the past several days I've been struggling to get everything (EncorePro, card reader and EncoreProAnalyzer) installed on my Windows Vista computer. I finally succeeded with a lot of help from a number of folks on cpaptalk. Very few of my problems were actually caused by Vista -- mostly just little differences from one computer setup to the next and a few things I missed or forgot.
I'm hoping to find time (!) to document all of the little glitches and tricks I found and then (if there isn't already one) see if there's an interest in putting it all together in one place.

I tried various times again to installed the 1.8i version.
"MSDE installer encountered an error, contact customer service." msg still keep coming up.
I borrowed from a friend the 1.6i copy which was sucessfully installed on his notebook running XP like my (with SP2). The error msg is now "The installer was unable to start the MSDE SQL Server".
Am I missing some step or updates. Please help.
Thx

Re: Encore Pro installation problem resolved!
MSDE is widely used for a bunch of applications. I have it installed and running successfully on numerous corporate desktops and laptops running XP Pro that very definitely do NOT have file and printer sharing enabled.derek wrote:It turns out that in order for the Microsoft SQL Desktop Server (MSDE) to install and function in Windows XP you must have File and Printer Sharing enabled in your networking set-up.
Perhaps it is a particular requirement for something else in the Encore Pro setup.
Cheers,
Bill
If you look at the README in the MSDE directory on the disk, it says you need that File and Print Sharing turned on, and also to set the device driver installation preferences:
I would highly recommend changing it back to something more secure after installation!1. In Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools.
2. Double-click Local Security Policy.
3. Expand Local Policies.
4. Select Security Options.
5. Ensure that the following option in the right pane is set to Silently Succeed before you install MSDE 2000 SP4:
* On Windows XP and Windows 2003: Devices: Unsigned driver installation behavior.
* On Windows 2000: Unsigned non-driver installation behavior.
