Swift -Dart Vader

Post by tbone106 » Sat Jun 18, 2005 1:22 am

WOW, this device is loud! I sound like dart vader. Anyone else experience this?

This is my first go at the interface.

Some report this but mine is really quieter than all other interfaces and my pressure is on the high side at 14. Since you are the lucky one, you can insert a little mesh inside to diffuse the air and making it quiet. It is turbelance that causes the noise.

tbone, I used two different Swifts and found them very noisy. I did the mesh trick - couldn't tell any difference in sound. Still was noisy. The noise... I could have gotten used to (or found some earplugs.) The way the exhaust hit things, especially my arm, was the deal-killer for me with the Swift. Even so, it suits so many other people so well, I do recommend it often.

I don't know the link, you might do a search. You just take a little piece of mesh from an orange bag or buiy it at walmart and put in in the nose piece. Really, mine has none of thnis and I hear absolutely no noise.

Hi

I do not have swift nose peice, but I got a Profile Lite gel nasal mask....I have trouble with my sinuses this time of year, winter...... Not only I grugle but I too often sound like Darth Vader as well!!!! Mine's a gel mask and it fit alright but it becomes loud if I am having a congested nose!!!

Been on CPAP for a while.....I had moderate apenoa

Yeah. My Swift is loud - louder when one nostril shuts which forces more of the air out through the vent. It wakes me enough to readjust the piece so that both sides are clear (I have a weak nostril that the device sort of mashes sometimes.) Now I am using a bed pillow that supports the Swift in the right position so I can at least nap with it.

I'ts a noise you can get used to, but way louder than the FlexiFit 407. That thing is almost silent!

Going to the fabric store and getting some toule (sp?) mesh fabric worked for me to quiet it down. Just a bit in the chamber, not enough to obstruct exhaust flow.
Also make sure the exhaust isn't hitting anything.

I switch between the Swift and Activa every other night. This works for me for now, until something better comes along.

Hi Snork1,

The fabric is tulle -- pronounced as you spell it. It is the stuff that ballerina's tutu's are made of.

I've used a Swift for 7-8 months now and I love it- I got a second one as soon as my insurance would let me (I've learned to always keep a spare mask around)- I haven't used any of my old favorite masks for more then a couple hours since starting with Swift. I haven't had much problems with either of my Swifts being loud but you do need to make sure you rotate the barrel part correctly- a minor adjustment can make a big difference. The only real problem I've had is that the capped end doesn't always seal as well as it should- if I hear it I know I need to push it together tighter. Its happened with both of my Swifts from time to time.

I haven't tried the tulle fix but as a sewer I would recomend washing the tulle first (a lot of fabrics have chemicals on them from manufacturing). Tulle comes in various mesh sizes from very small to large so you may need to play around with which one works the best. You don't need much- most fabric stores will cut 1/8 yard pieces (4.5" by width of fabric) which would be less then 25 cents.

I use pistahio nut bag mesh. Opening is about 1/8 inch. You don't want a mesh that is too fine, as I would think that would block too much air and affect the pressure in your mask.

Agree, rotating the barrel can make a big difference in the sound, but mine is normally very quiet except on inhale. But so was the Breeze

I must be extremely lucky,

mine makes no noise at all if I seal it right. I is as quiet as my Activa.

TBone,

If it is winter where you are and you are using the Profile Lite, it sounds like you are experiencing rainout. That means you are getting loud noises (like gurgling) near your ears or moisture dropping into your nose. You need to get the marvelous Australian heated hose. The Australian heated hose costs $159 Australian dollars = $114 U.S. dollars in Oct 2004. The heated hose eliminates rainout:

You also need to get some additional parts if you are not using the same voltage as the Australians.

Where do you live?

I have used a Profile Lite which is not a noisy mask.
