Encore Pro Help

Post by NeurosurgeryNP » Tue Jun 14, 2005 9:05 pm

Hello all.

I have been using Encore Pro for over 2 months now. I went to download data tonight and it si telling me that it can't connect to the database. The database is on my laptop and that is what I have the software installed on. Any ideas?

Jen,
This usually means the the Microsoft SQL Server is not running. If you can find the icon on your task-bar you can check the status, but here's a better way - go to:
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services
Scroll down the list and look for MSSQLSERVER and check the status and make sure it is "Started". If it is not, right-click on it and select "Start". If it is not, also check "Startup Type" and make sure it is set to "Automatic" (unless you want to start it yourself each time you use Encore Pro)

If that all looks ok, then make sure you have a valid database file: go to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data
and make sure there is a file EncorePro.mdf

The next question is what version of Windows are you running. In the past couple of days I have had reports of people running under Windows 98 not being able to access the database through MyEncore and Encore Pro... I'm not sure what is going on there.

Derek:
I am using windows 98, with a cable internet connection, and Encore Pro, and have had a couple of instances where the SQL server would be looking for the database on the internet instead of on the computer. I usually now shut off the SQL Server unless I am actually using Encore Pro, no need to invite unwanted guests. Looking forward to day that you release the "MY Encore " software.

Derek and NiteAir

Don't remember where I read it but it was suggested to not leave MSSQL active if your internet connection is always on (cable modem/DSL) as it left a "hole" for those probing from the outside to do harm. Believe it leaves an extra port(s) open to your computer that firewalls don't block by default. Could I guess determine what extra port(s) are affected and block them specifically with your firewall. Found it easier to just start MSSQL as needed with my firewall blocking internet activity and then stop it before going on the internet.

Below was not what I recall reading but decided to doublecheck...

MS SQL Security Center states Default install of MSSQL monitors TCP port 1433 and UDP port 1434...configure firewall to filter out packets addressed to those ports.

I am still trying to get my newly purchased Encore Pro (shipped promptly from cpap.com, I might add) downloaded to my pc. I get an error message at the end that says "Unable to load MSDE successfully, please contact Respironics". Of course when I call Respironics they won't give any advice because I'm not a DME provider and the software is not intended for personal use. I have been using the REMStar Auto for about 3 months and when I did take my smart card into my DME the readout showed that my pressure was usually running at about 18 but my average AHI for the period they looked at was still 19.5. Sooooo, the bottom line is I want to track this information myself and see if I can do better before I go back to my ENT and he tells me I need surgery. Derek gave me some info and told me to look for the MSSQLServer on my computer. The only thing I found was the MSSQLServerADHelper...is that the same thing? If not, do I just need to download the MSDE 2000 from Microsoft then try to re-install the Encore? Thanks for any assistance anybody can give me as I am getting very frustrated by the lack of sleep!!!

Assume you are using XP Home Edition as I had similar problem. Could also apply to XP Pro or 98....not sure. If I remember...Do the following first.

Go to your LAN/High Speed INet Connection/Internet Connection...whichever you have...and click on properties. Look to see if you already have installed and checked Client for MS Networks and File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks. If not install them/put check in front of them. Then hopefully install will go OK.

Good luck

Jim,
I looked under properties on my LAN internet connection and did see that Client for MS Networks and File & Printer Sharing for MS Networks were installed and checked. Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using a software firewall...if so, completely close it until you complete your install. Some of the spyware resident programs designed to protect in the background could also potentially cause a problem...close them. I'd close just about everything in your system tray just to make sure.

Other than above I'm drawing a blank on where to go next. Your not trying to do an install as "network setup" rather than as a "Single Computer setup" are you?

You've pretty much exausted all possible XP/Computer related glitches I can think of that could have prevented a full install of Encore Pro, including the MS SQL....so back to Derek's zeroing in on the MS SQL side of things. Try to manually install the MS SQL off the Encore Pro CD by going to the MSDE2000_SP3 directory and using Setup.exe file as that is the SQL Server Setup file.

Everybody,
Just to stop the conjectures, we got Jen straightened out yesterday. She had, by mistake, uninstalled the SQL Server... The fix was a reinstall of Encore Pro and the Smart Card reader.

IT WORKED!!! I turned off my anti-virus/firewall protection and put the CD back in and everything worked like a charm. Thanks for the help! Now I just need to get my smart card reader set up and I will be ready to experiment!!! I actually took the day off from work today because I am just so exhausted so I can't wait to see how I am doing with my APAP.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Glad you got it all going. Once you get used to it make sure to download Derek's MyEncore to use in conjuction with Encore Pro...you'll love how it presents the data.

Get it here: http://lewiston.mit.edu/myencore

I'll do that! Derek's review of the software was very helpful for me as I was trying to figure out all the info that was presented after I was finally able to use my smart card. He is one smart guy! That's awful nice of him to produce that software and give it to us "hose-heads" for free!
Thanks again!
