My mom's poor nose!

Post by MWR » Sun Jun 15, 2008 5:13 am

Hi -- I have a question for experienced CPAP users -- my mom recently began to use a full face mask CPAP and while she is sleeping better than she has in years, she is having a wicked problem with the bridge of her nose.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to cushion her nose without messing up the seal?
Thanks!

I have read here of people using moleskin or band-aids. One of the forum members (padacheek) also makes a fleece insert that pads and protects the bridge of the nose.

I have just started to get that same sore on the bridge of my nose. Very, very sore. I changed masks for awhile to give that sore place time to heal. I also tried the moleskin and it helps a little bit, but the pressure would still be there.

poor mask for mom

Good suggestions - others might have more ideas if they knew which mask poor mom was having trouble with? Really, there are just soooo many masks.

I'm not positive, but I believe that the people who use moleskin use it on the mask rather than the skin on the nose.

Actually cutting a piece about 3/4 x 1 inch and then nipping off the corners works pretty well. The moleskin really sticks so dirty it up a little by sticking it on the countertop or something then stick it on the bridge of the nose. Without doing this, the moleskin stuck so good I like to never got it off. You can use the same piece for several days. Also MACKS silicone ear plugs (WalMart or any big drugstore) will also seal any leaks around the eyes from the nose bridge and allow the forehead piece to be adjusted so the top of the mask doesn't actually touch the nose bridge to seal and that is the way is is meant to work! Seems like all these masks are $200 do it yourself kits and you have to find the stuff that is missing to make it work!!! Good Luck.

What about Mack's Silicone Ear Plugs you can buy at walmart for around $5.00, roll them out and stuff them inside the silicone on the mask, I forgot who's idea this was, maybe Den's, anyway there is a post on it and how to do it, click the yellow light bulb above and do some research on it!

Here's a link to a photo of how the Mack's works.

Just take a lump of putty, pull it apart and roll a thin rope between your hands. Apply to the cushion where it contacts your face to form a gasket. You should use about 1 lump, more and you are making it too thick. Put the mask on and smoosh it down on your face. You are ready to go!

I found that I had problems with sores on the bridge of my nose because the mask my provider gave me was too small. You might want to look into that to see if that is the problem.
