Need a lubricant for the bridge of my nose

Post by Lee2263 » Fri Jun 13, 2008 8:53 am

I have a full face mask and have suffered 6 days of a too small mask. This caused the bridge area to start catching on my skin as it dried. It did not slide at all. Now I have the large size which is allowing more room, but taking it off this morning, the silicone membrane kinda wanted to stick to my skin.

Called the store where I got it, they are clueless! And they have another lady with the same problem going on. And they don't know what to do. The guy even called the rep who said to adjust the whatever thingy, useless people.....sigh............

So who uses something to lube the silicone membrane a bit, just to let it slide rather than pull when it gets dry. I thought maybe something in the condome area in the drugstore for those silky smoother silicone rubbers. LOL!

I use 3M's waterproof tape, that is rubbery and has some thickness to it on the bridge of my nose.

Works great to keep from getting sore line on my bridge, and I don't have any trouble with the mask slipping, but I can move it up and down OK.

I have also trimmed a bit of the soft plastic to make the opening higher/wider at the bridge. You have to do this very carefully, so that the cut is smooth and has no place that is nipped - or it will tear with pressure.

If you are putting tape on the bridge of your nose, then it may cause the skin to become tender. That would make even more raw skin, I should think!

One thing that has been working for others on the forum is a smear of milk of magnesia (skim milk works, too) on the skin where the tape will be applied. Allow the area to dry, and then apply the adhesive. It allows for enough adhesion, while also not sacrificing as many skin cells upon removal.

I like your idea about the silicone-friendly lubricant from the condom area. It is always amazing to see the things that others think about that are such GREAT ideas!

Best wishes,

Karen

Generic brands of K-Y jelly is rather inexpensive (about $3 for a big tube), this material is water based and safe for most skins and plastics. Since I started using that with my nasal pillows, all soreness is gone, and I get a better seal too!

Prolonged use of tapes may irritate some sensitive skins.

Well another medical supplier gave me some samples of a waterbased lube, probably much like the KY, and said to try this. She showed me another mask that I may try in 6 months since I can get a new one 2x a year. It is a gel mask that fits over the lower part of the nose and the mouth, but it is all membrane, like a bubble. Looked interesting. The large size I wore last night worked pretty good, I could have it a bit higher up and still encompass much of my chin without any leaks.

Not sure I could handle the tape idea, the nose is raw enough as it is.
Thanks.
PS. these people really don't know much about the stuff they sell do they? BTW, this person who gave me the samples, said she would not have fitted me with a large, but perhaps even a different model and all altogether. Oh well.
