Maybe we should start a new mask trial fund. We can all throw in $10 and buy one mask together that we ship around to each other so that all of us can try it long enough to see that it won't work. It should be able to make the rounds in a few weeks

Actually, I think that's a great idea, Wader! A mask club with only one "officer" - someone (not me!!) to be responsible for collecting the money, making the initial purchase, and keeping track of who gets the mask next. Unlimited membership.

Some of us might even be willing to toss in a mask or two from our discards drawer for others to try at no cost.

Also, in my backup stash of interfaces I love, I have an extra Breeze (new...used once by someone else) and a headgear-already-removed-by-me new Aura that others would be welcome to try.

That's thinking outside the box for sure, Wader...outside the cash register box! I like your idea.

I second that Wader. Sounds like a great idea.

At $10 each, we need about 15 people to buy the first mask. I would suggest that each user is responsible for the cost of Priority mailing it to the next user. The list of users and the order they get the mask is based on the signup order. That gets mailed with the mask to the next user on the list after you have used it for a week (or less if you can't stand it) and cross your name off the list. At the end of the cycle, it goes back to the originator.

Once it has made a complete round of the initial purchasers, it becomes available for trail by request from anyone who has participated in a buying round.

With serious interest, we should be able to get at least 3 or 4 masks in the circulating "library".

Question is, who manages all this. I am willing to trust pretty much anyone with $10 of my money. One suggestion might be that each mask has a "manager". The manager volunteer steps to the plate and becomes the manager who is "up" and collects the money. Each member votes for a specific mask when they send their $10, but the manager gets to make the final decision and gets the first trial. When there are enough new members to buy the mask of choice, the next manager comes forth and we do it again.

That way, no one gets all the money, no one is stuck with all the responsibility, and the work is spread around a bit. Each manager would need to keep track of where his/her managed mask was. Open questions would be how we manage the mask once it has made a complete round?

Anyway, sounds like a great idea to me.

Aura

Post by felineperson3 » Thu May 26, 2005 6:04 pm

Rested Gal, I wish I could convert and modify my Aura like you did. I don't know where to obtain the extra velcro straps that I would need even if I could figure out for sure just where to cut the plastic head piece to free the tubing that holds the nose piece. If you have any ideas on walking me through it I'm willing to start the chain saw and try.
I just missed you by minutes in the chat room and was so disappointed. Maybe I'll luck out and catch up with you next time.
Thanks for all the help and encouragement that you've given me already.

Maybe we could get the manufacturers to donate the masks and have people provide feedback and reviews.

How do you address the hygiene issue? The herpes simplex virus can be transmitted even when blisters aren't present (common cold sore).

Maybe for a charge, the manufacturer could sell areas that make contact, i.e, pillows and the such -- but to be honest, this might not be fool proof.

I'd ask why these devices are soo expensive? Research? cost of materials (can't be more then a few dolloars).

How do you address the hygiene issue?
I'd say each person who receives the trial mask just has to do whatever cleaning/disinfecting he feels comfortable about doing. I guess it might be a good idea to have each "trial-er" sign a waiver or whatever you call it - that they understand the risk of using a used mask and won't hold anyone responsible if they think they caught something from it.

And this just occurred to me. What if one of the people in line to trial a mask is so... (well, I don't want to say "anal", but...oh well, it's psychiatric term, right? lol)...concerned about germs that they take a mask all apart, scrub it too hard, perhaps tear a cushion in an overly enthusiastic cleaning, soak it in something that makes the seal lose its oomph, drop a little piece down a drain...and it's not in good shape for the next person's trial with it?

On second thought, never mind. That person isn't going to want to be within a foot radius of a used mask anyway.

Or, heaven forbid, someone pull a trial mask off their face in their sleep and throw it against the wall? Not meaning to, of course. Or break something during adjustments? Or the next person finds it broken in shipping through no fault of anyone packing it or receiving it?

I'm still willing to toss in my $10 and take my chances that a mask would reach me in good enough shape for a fair trial of it. If I broke it, or tore it, I'd certainly pay to replace it. Just playing devil's advocate a bit.

Mask

Post by CareS » Fri May 27, 2005 8:44 am

It's funny that the topic came up about recycling these masks because I was thinking about suggesting it. I have a very slightly used RESMED FF mask size medium with a standard cushion which I bought from the DME here in Ottawa Canada. I would be happy to get back half of what I paid for it and I know some people swear by that mask. I have just ordered a Comfort Curve from cpap.com and now I have read some posts that say it hasn't worked for them but others say it has. I have always been able to fall asleep watching t.v. on timer, but can't watch using my Aptiva nasal mask and I also need glasses to watch television. Lately, I have been waking up regularly after 3 hrs sleep and removing the Aptiva and falling back to sleep without it. Back to the topic, yes, it would be nice to be able to try out these masks for a trial period to determine whether or not they would work for us individually before we purchase one. I don't know what kind of arrangement can be made to ensure that the mask is returned, perhaps a deposit to be refunded. I will be interested to know if something can be worked out. CareS

Sign me up for the mask trials! I think it is a great idea. I am the type person who just has to have the newest mask out and I think this would be a good way of not getting burned. Against my better judgement, and after reading all the negative comments regarding the Comfort Curve, I just HAD to try one anyway. So now, after a week of jerking, pushing & pulling, removing parts, etc, I have a mask that is IMHO, a "piece of junk"! It will NOT seal on my face, period. So the mask trial idea is great for me. Let me know where to sent my money.

Gilda

ResMed Ultra Mirage

Post by jburgher » Sat Jan 27, 2007 10:40 am

I have two ResMed Ultra Mirage masks with headgear if someone is interested in getting this started. One is missing the swivel, but it is on the other. Both are missing the headgear clips ($6 per pair). One mask is a standard size and the other a large size. The forehead supports and mask cushion are slightly discolored, but could very well be cleaned and sterilized. Please let me know if you would like to start here - I'll gladly send the masks to the first person in the circle.[/code]

The only "down" side to this (besides a hygiene thing) is dealing with masks after they've been at a house with a smoker. No offense to anyone who smokes, but I don't think I'm the only one sensitive to this.

Just a thought I'd toss out there.

I was just going to post the same thing Kimberly. I AM a smoker, so I would not join because I know it would ruin it for many others, but some may not be as considerate. This could be a big problem for some!

That being said I do have a comfort curve mask that I can't use. I bought it used and only used it about 4 nights myself. If any one doesn't mind a mask from a smoker, It's free for the asking. It has S,M,L pillows and all it's parts. Just PM me first one gets it. Just paying it foward.

Brenda

I'm a newbie and have been a successful cpap user for 5 months now. Prior to seeing a provider I read old posts from this board which led me to choose a Swift Breeze. (side/stomach sleeper). Next month my insurance will buy a new interface and believe me I have been reading like crazy to try to decide which to choose. Narrowed down to Activa and Aura Twilight. Rested Gal, I would be thrilled to take you up on your offer to try your deconstructed Aura. I've tried to figure out the whole chainsaw/pantyhose thing and had thought the Activa might be the easiest choice.
