M Series Humidifier redesign

Post by akcpapguy » Thu Mar 13, 2008 5:21 pm

The M Series humidifier has recieved yet a new design in regards to the water chamber. The biggest change is the inlet and outlet tubes are now staggered and have a round end with a deeper seated connection. I have pictures, but they are on my phone and my data connection here in AK sucks today, sent them to my email to post, but they haven't arrived yet. If I don't recieve them before I go home I will download them at home and update this thread with the pictures.

Will this water chamber work in the humidifiers we already have? Or will the whole unit (humidifier) need changed? I don't use my M series humidifier unless I am going somewhere for the night and it is easier to pack than the Fisher and Paykel 100.

Carol, I'll bet they are not anywhere close to compatable. "inlet and outlet tubes are now staggered and have a round end with a deeper seated connection" sounds like a complete redesign. Typical, I guess we better stick with the F&P. I think they knew it was a bad design but it would be to big a recall if they admitted it.

I finally have my chamber sealed and I am not about to open it again. I still take it along on a trip but since the heating element shorted out I use it in passover mode so I guess it is still worth something.

Did I see it listed on the new pricing schedule at $445, Ouch! I guess I won't be getting a new one!

Carol,

No the new "redesigned" chambers WILL NOT work with your old humidifier, as 6pt pointed out the tubes are round and staggered as you can see in the pictures below.

I spoke with a Respironics tech shortly after I posted the first time and he told me that they redesigned it to try and avoid the introduction of water into the PAP machine. They have been seeing far too many M Series machines in for repairs due to water damage.

I think they know it was a bad design in that respect, however if you are carefull enough you shouldn't get water back into the machine with the old design. I did have one patient though who brought in a machine in for repairs 2 months in a row and both times it was water damage. I asked him after the second time to show me how he puts his water tank in his machine (something I have patients physically do to get the feel of it when I set them up), and he literally slid the tank into the machine and than told me, "You can only get it so far and than you have to take you hand and give it a good hard slap to get it in the rest of the way to seal up". He went on to say, "Make sure you tell people to put their hand behind the hose connector so the water doesn't splash out there when you do it though" to which I replied, "So where do you think the water goes in the other part of the seal?" He started laughing a little and said "Well damn I guess into the machine that's why it's broke all the time huh?", I said "Yup" and we both had a little laugh. I than showed him how to seal the tank a little more subtly.

Don't get me wrong I'm not defending Respironics design flaws here in the humidifier one bit, we told them it was a POS when we were testing it and they still went to production. Anyway on to the pictures as I promised.

Hmm well I have nifty pictures to post, but can't seem to figure out how to post the dang things, can anybody direct me here?

you need the pictures on some website such as photobucket - once you have uploaded them there the img command will work - just copy the link off the photobucket page and check preview to see they come

IF YOU DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE POSTING SOMETHING UNDER YOUR OWN NAME, THEN YOU DEFINITELY SHOULDN'T POST IT AT ALL!!!!! Get a life and pick on somebody else, somewhere else! We don't cotton to strangers what post s**t like that here!!!!!

I have never understood why some forums allow anonymous "guest" postings in the first place as it is easily disabled in the forum software. If people have a real need for info, they will register just like you & I did. Allowing anonymous posts does more harm than good IMHO and only allows the scum to hide beneath their pointy hoods.

One thing I forgot to ask the Support Tech was how long they will be support the old style humidifier with regards to replacement chambers. I will call them first thing in the morning and get TRY to get an answer to that question.

Thanks guys for your support!!! That is why I love this forum as the members truly care for each other.

Obviously that person is not on a fixed income and has loads of money to burn. Around here it seems that everything keeps going up and up and wages stay nearly the same.

People on limited incomes are really feeling the pinch.

I feel for those that are uninsured as well.

akcpapguy,
Thanks for the pics and info. Thumbs-UP for your efforts.

Very interesting.... the new water chamber and flow-coupling design. And probably a great idea... if the mod doesn’t offer any other yet-to-be-found problems.

But... but.... but:
In this M-series modification-of-design phase, did they attempt or even bother to attempt to remedy the missing data problem?

Or, did they continue to ignore it.... because it doesn't present a flood (yes, a pun) of in-warranty repairs and immediate dollar cost to the company?

Hopefully it won't occur but: If someone just happens to die from or suffer a heart attack or stroke during a xPAP therapy night when M-series Encore data is mysteriously absent from the reports, and the therapy data store of that person reflects sporadically or frequently occuring partly missing data..... a smart family and their shrewd lawyer(s) could probably parlay that into a notable ka-ching response from a court.

I mean, because it's been a known problem since the M-series units were marketed. And the data, unless I have my brain in backwards, is supposed to present clear indicators of therapy effectiveness or ineffectiveness, and dangerous apnea conditions or the absence thereof. And it's known that apneas correlate to hypoxias.

Respironics.... Wake Up.... and provide a fix or replacement for every M-series unit fielded or shelf-stocked that suffers the missing data problem. Patients deserve quality and consistent reliability. Right?

Yeah... Nodzy said it.... despite a low caffeine level.
