Got Headrest today/REVIEW:FIRST NIGHT

Post by jsmythe » Mon Feb 11, 2008 8:59 pm

OK..I got my new Headrest today and I am very anxious to try it out tonight! I think with Jcarns rubber-band trick it will work just fine. Wait and see. It just needed to be a little closer to my face and the bands seemed to work. I tossed and turned with it on while fitting it ,like I do in my sleep, no leaks-good deal. I have been sick and have a leaky nose so I will see how it goes...

I have used the Activa so long, this is so different and lightweight. Feels really comfortable trying it out. Will know more after a nights sleep in it.

The rubber band helped mine, too. I agree that it is comfortable and easy to toss and turn with. Watch for rainout. A hose cover and turning the humidifier down fixed it for me. My leak rate is lower than it has ever been and my AHI is also down. Great mask!

I switched from the Activa to the headrest and don't care to go back but I will still keep it around. I used the headrest straight out of the box will little leak problems. I've noticed my leak rates to be much lower with the headrest. Snore numbers appear to be up, but I am not concerned with it. AHI is about the same to a little lower compared to the Activa. I found that it is noisier than the Activa.

RAINSUX is right about rainout. I have an Aussie hose and have covered the hose up to the detachable mask portion and am unable to set it above 1 on the humidifier. There is only one place for the water to go if it collects in this mask and it WILL get your attention.

Good luck!

MY FIRST NIGHT WITH HEADREST MASK

Post by jsmythe » Tue Feb 12, 2008 5:48 am

Well, after the first night, I can say ditto to what ColoradoDreamer said:

With the exception, I love my Activa. The biggest problem that I had with the Aura was that the headgear kept sliding up the back of my head and unseating the pillows. The headgear is comfortable but I think I am going to have to work on keeping it in place or get rid of it and make new. I woke up several times to pull it back down in place and fix the seal. The last time was about 5 o'clock, I just pulled it off and put the Activa on. Other wise, it fit great straight out of the package.

The inside of my nostrils seems a bit sore, not being used to the pillows.I used Ayr gel on them and they feel a little better. Humidifier was on 3, I was afraid of rain out as Colorado and Sam said, so I didn't turn it up. Have hose cover, not heated, but have the repti cable on its way.

To me it was quieter than my Activa. I am so used to the sound that it really did not bother me at all.
I think what really surprised me was that I was able to use it with my high pressure of 17. I did not even notice the pressure at all with the pillows, they stayed in place just fine. I used a small amount of Lansinoh on my nares before I put the mask on, was afraid it would make my nares sore not being used to this type of mask.

Overall, I love it. Now I can understand why Sharon was so lost when hers broke...it is a great mask. Thanks for the influence Sharon!

watch for rain

I agree- it is most comfortable and doesnt leak when you move
[ I use swift for backup ]

I have heated hose- also cover over heated hose- also polar fleece over
short smaller hose and even fleece sewn around tubes coming down around nose

I have a large head size so am lucky there- it stays on just fine

I think it does a great job of sealing at the nares

good luck and watch for rain packer

Your no. 17 hurricane will protect you from some of it.... rainout is always much worse a lower pressures...

joyce
glad to hear you had a decent night with the headrest

i couldn't use mine 'as is' out of the box, so since i made the mods provided by the kind folks on the boards, i no longer have the problem of headgear riding up...plus the all important "tights" strap across the front of the mask makes a huge difference; keep up with the ayr gel, too, joyce; and if you don't really need the hh set at 3, try reducing it if you do get rainout...though like ozij says, you may not have much of an issue with that at a pressure of 17

hopefully it will get better and better as you adjust to a new interface

i was wondering how you did...thanks for posting your experience

I got mine a little over a week ago. Used it for a week, and I have now gone back to my Optilife. I had no leak problems, no rainout problems, noise level was tolerable, but I woke up every night with a headache. No headaches since I went back to the Optilife. I'm not sure what the problem is as it seemed to fit comfortably. I think decapitation will take place shortly.
