Aura Exhaust Ports

Post by momadams » Fri Jun 22, 2007 9:03 am

Where are the exhaust ports on the Aura - I've looked at photos, but can't see them.

"The real plus, sound-wise, with the "Headrest" is that the exhaust never hits anything. With other masks, the exhaust occasionally hits bedcovers, arm, pillow, sleeping partner, etc., adding noise. That doesn't happen with the "Headrest" (Aura.)"

The arrow shows the position of the exhaust ports. The air flows up toward your forehead.

Thanks, that helps.

I need to be careful of air swirling around my eyes. Does this happen with the Aura?

Not at all.
Well, not at my pressure of close to 7, and I doubt that at higher pressures either. Those ports are 5 very small holes, aranged in a arc all pointing upwards, and they dissipate the blowing air. They are above eye level, I would have pointed the arrow to the top of the black square about half an inch or more higher that it its, just where the hose starts bending back.

I can't imagine anything that will deflect the exhaust towards your eyes.... Maybe the visor of a baseball cap - but you'ld probably have to tweak it for that.

The air dissipates straight up (up meaning the direction of the top of your head, regardless of where the ceiling is) - I never feel it on any part of my body.

What a rational design!
Crap. Now I've got mask envy again.

Yeah, the arrow shows the path of the actual exhaust. You can dig your face into the pillow and be fine.

aura mask

The exhaust of the Aura is one of my favorite things about the mask. It is worth all the removal of the headgear and strapping on of panty hose. You can actually cover your face with the blanket on a cold night and not suffocate. Since it does not hit anything, it is quiet.

For new readers, "Aura" is the original name of that neat mask. Later the name was changed to "Headrest". Now the mask is officially named the "Twilight NP" distributed by Invacare. Not to be confused with another mask Invacare carries called just the "Twilight."

With the letters "NP" (for "nasal pillows") the Twilight NP is what used to be the old "Aura."

Without the NP tacked on, a Twilight mask is just a traditional style nasal mask (covers the nose.)

I've been using the Twilight NP ever since it's inception as the Aura. Absolutely love that mask. Everything the other posters have said about its wonderful exhaust vent placement is true. Doesn't hit anything...not you, your pillow, your arm, your eyes, your bedcovers, or your bed partner.

Best mask I've ever used for burrowing down into the pillow and under the covers, and sleeping in any sleep position. Lets me sleep with the side of my face flat against a pillow, just like in the "good old days" before cpap.

All that said, it doesn't mean another person will like it. But, boy, I sure do.

It's true that the exhaust not hitting anything means there won't be any additional noise caused by that. However, as much as I love the Twilight NP (Aura) I wouldn't call it a "quiet" mask. Like most nasal pillows masks, there is an inhale/exhale varying sound associated with it. There's a shuusssh sound each time you inhale. I don't mind that varying sound, given how comfortably I'm able to sleep with the Twilight NP.

I am wondering if the part that rests on the top of your head will cause some hair loss where it sits. I liked the Breeze but it started to cause some hair loss where the top piece sat and I eventually took that part off and liked it much better, until I found the CL2 and I used it for a while and then cut the top piece off of it too and liked it much better. My CL2 now just has the part that fits on my forehead, and one strap around my head and one over to kind of keep it in place.

Now I'm thinking of trying the Twilight NP version and wondering if the top piece will cause more hair loss that I can't afford to lose....All the other features discussed sound like just what I have been looking for, Have some many mask now that one more won't hurt....

Yes, there have been reports of hair loss and hair breakage from the headgear. Also the headgear seems overly large. Those are two of the reasons that many of us "de-cap-i-tate" the Aura. Without the headgear, it's the greatest.
