A tardy report ResMed Vantage S-8 recall unit

Post by Bookbear » Mon Jun 11, 2007 8:37 pm

Sorry to have left this so long. Three weeks ago I sent an email to cpap.com about my ResMed Vantage S-8 (one of the flaming recalled ones ). I had called ResMed themselves twice, the first time the people who answered knew nothing about the recall, the second time I was told I would be sent a packet of information. Never got that.

A little over two weeks ago, I got a phone call from cpap.com, telling me my replacement unit would be shipped the next day, giving me instructions on how to return the recalled unit. It arrived four days later on the day it was promised, along with a prepaid return label. The box also included another travel case, another hose, and another complete set of manuals!

I didn't feel right about keeping the manuals, hose, and case (have those already, and they were not part of the recall, only the actual blower). I returned them all the next day. Cpap.com even said they would call UPS and arrange a pick up at my home if I couldn't conveniently make it to a UPS pick up facility. Nice!

Ironically, the day after cpap.com called, ResMed called. They told me that I would be contacted in about four weeks by a technician who would then schedule a visit to my home to exchange the recalled unit, and "transfer my setting for me." When I do hear form them, I will tell them that the unit has already been replace by cpap.com... in four days, not four+ weeks. Kudos to cpap.com!

Well if it happens to flame up on you before you get it exchanged, rest assured, if you come by here we can help you put those flames out ;D

You should have kept the manuels and papers, they were wrapped in plastic, and would be water safe from the Fire Dog. Jim

One can only imagine the experiments that were needed to debunk that bit of folklore. I KNEW I was missing something not having cable... or perhaps not.

I would have prefered it to be a cat, but everyone knows you can't train cats.

HEY, GoofProof. My grandmother had a white Persian cat who was trained to use the toilet in the bathroom!!! And that cat played fetch too. I had a Siamese cat that would fetch too. Nyah, nyah!

OK folks..I know this is an 'old topic', but I was just about to make
a cash purchase on a 2006 Vantage unit...used under 600 hrs and
serial number doesnt match the recall.
BUT..........seeing it makes me nervous as heck. Please give me
some feedback. Thanks

As long as the serial number is not one of the Recalled units go for it!!! I had a Resmed S8 Elite w/EPR not subject to recall and loved it. I bought a lightly used Resmed S8 AutoSet Vantage complete (505 hours on it) that it turned out shortly thereafter was subject to Recall (bought it a month before the Recall was issued). Resmed replaced that Vantage despite I had bought it used from a private individual. No problem. I loved that AutoSet Vantage too. So much so that when I was switched to a bi-level I insisted on a Resmed VPAP Auto.

Out of all the thousands of machines involved in the recall, only 7 malfunctioned and only two of those caused any damage. Small comfort to these two owners, of course, but really... no houses burned down, no one was injured... a table was scorched, a unit burned out and the case partially deformed from heat. The recall involved a electrical cord connector (the bit with two metal prongs that the power cord was pushed on to). This connector was soldered to the motherboard of the unit, so a return was necessary to remedy the situation. ResMed did the right thing, providing new units at no cost to the patient, including shipping and the time costs of a person to deliver the new/set up/take away the old. If your unit's serial number was not on the recall list, you can rest easy. If it is, ResMed would likely replace it even though you were not the original purchaser, but you could ask the original owner you are buying it from to contact the DME or retailer they got it from for a replacement unit before purchasing it.

Slinky...thank you...that is very comforting news!
I've been doing alot of research, and the recall had scared me some,
as this is a private cash sale. Thanks for the reply.
