Recall Letter

Post by Bookbear » Mon May 21, 2007 2:16 pm

Oh, frabulous day! I received my ResMed recall letter today (as promised four weeks ago by ResMed, but headed and return addressed "SteriCycle" for some reason -- don't throw away a letter from SteriCycle, thinking it is junk, it says nothing about ResMed on the envelope!).

Calling the number in the letter, connected me to the same recording I had encountered before, telling me about the recall, who ResMed was cooperating with, not all models are involved, your serial number will be required, how to find your serial number, etc.. Punched in my serial number when asked, my serial number was verified again, and I was transferred to a live person.

Live person takes my serial number again, verifies it again, and takes my name, phone number, and address and says that a technician will call me in the next four weeks to set a date for my machine to be picked up and replaced. I asked if the replacement would be like for like, i.e. a Vantage for a Vantage, or an Elite for an Elite. She said, "I think so."

Anyone have one replaced in the states this way yet... a tech coming to your house to pick up and replace the unit? This is going to cost ResMed a bundle.

How ironic is this? The same day I get the letter from SteriCycle re the ResMed recall, Cpap.com phones me and says that they are sending me my replacement unit tomorrow. I will pack up the old unit in the same box, stick on the return UPS label, and call UPS to pick it up, or take it to the UPS store, my choice. So it appears that I will not be having a ResMed tech visit my house and change out the unit in a month, but receive the replacement via UPS in a few days. Way to go, Cpap.com!

Big thumbs up!

What ResMed machines are involved? I have the ResMed S7 Lightweight and the ResMed Auto Set Spirit.

Only S-8's are involved, and not all of those. The serial numbers involved in the recall are as follows (remember, S-8's only):

From To
20040285613 to 20060269563

20060275728 to 20060276751

20060277160 to 20060277415

20060281672 to 20060281991

20060283424 to 20060283743

20060284896 to 20060285445

20060287568 to 20060290823

20060292360 to 20060294694

20060312361 to 20060312597

20060318692 to 20060319459

20060325074 to 20060327794

20060330588 to 20060331043

Hope this helps!

Nothing with mine, as far as I can tell.

According to ResMed, there have been 7 reported instances of the pin connector for the power cord shorting out. 300,000 plus machines used this connector circuit board with the pins attached, and they are replacing all the machines to avoid liability for any possible injuries or property damage. There have been no reported instances of injury, and only a scorched table in the way of property damage so far.

Patients are supposed to continue using their machines until they are replaced. They ARE advising patients not to use oxygen along with the involved cpaps, since there is a (very) remote chance of explosion or fire.

ResMed's web site has details on the recall. Hope this helps.

Snoredog, for shame! You're frightening the horses! Newbies will be afraid to use their machines.

Anyway, that explains the acrid stench and the clouds of vapor in the morning... and here I thought it was just Satan.

They (Resmed) tell you you can still use your machine (until they can replace it) but to make sure it's isn't near anything combustible like your drapes.
Really. Can you believe it?

Its just the senseless bloody mindedness that apparently substitutes for thinking in snoredog's wierd world.

"Painting the Resmed machines in images such as that posted above is a gross exaggeration and does noone any good especially cpapers seeking accurate information"

I kind of appreciated the humor and think that most people are smart enough to figure out that it was humor.
