New Hybrid User and have ?'s

1st impressions:

So many ways to adjust this mask! I settled on the large mask and large pillows in the tall position.

I have been using the ultra mirage nasal mask (my old faithful!) with a chin strap. I have always had trouble keeping my mouth shut! I tried the UMFF, but swallowed so much air I thought I'd explode!

For once, I did not swallow air!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love the way you just seem to naturally keep your mouth shut. I tried the F & P 431 and it just make my mouth hurt - the hybrid solved this problem as well.

But here is my problem. I have my Aussie heated hose hung from a stand so that the connection can swivel over my head and I don't have to worry about it getting tangled in my covers. But, it points the hose directly over the exhaust port and makes a horrible noise! I thought I was leaking and my hubby just came over and moved it to one side.

My impression is that the hose on this mask should really go to one side or the other or down. What do others do? I also noticed that it pulled and made the mask leak when I had the hose still hanging over my head.

But even with that minor issue - this is one great mask!

P.S. I have been itching since the mask came out to try it, but could not get it from my DME and finally bought a gently used one from a new member on this forum. The person is stark23x. We agreed on a price mid-Tuesday, and I received the mask in perfect condition, new headgear, case, box and manual on Friday! We kept in e-mail contact, was given a tracking number and it was a smooth transaction. Nice and honest person!

I just finished my second night with the Hybrid. I agree that the hose is probably the biggest issue. The first night I had the hose under my covers, but that seemed to present too much tugging when I turned over. Last night I hung it from a scrunchie on my headboard, which worked better -- except when the hose was straight up and therefore blocking the exhaust ports. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

What I did was give a little more slack, and when it woke me up I just gave a little flick of the hose to push it off to the side.

So far I'm loving this mask. It seems to solve the problems I had with Swift and UMFF.

I'd like some suggestions on how to make the nasal pillows seal a bit better. Is it ok to coat them with KY or something that will make them stay sealed through the night? I started the night with some Ayr in my nose and it sealed like a champ, but by 4:00 I had to make some minor adjustments in the one nostril to re-seal it.

Hi Sleepyred,

I am glad you like the Hybrid.

I have the Aussie Hose as well. I place the hose over me, on the opposite side to what I am laying down on.

Many people put a short 18inch tubing with a bendable (forgot word) connector. I do not put the hose straight down. (I feel it has a crowbar effect and gets lifted off that way.)

I am glad you and stark had a good exhange.

Jeff -

I use lanolin on the nasal pillows. Seal well that way.

I do not like the water based lubricants for sealing. I find them to thin, and they dry during the night. The saline gels, may irritate me so I avoid those unless I needed for dry nostirls which I do not.

I use a lip balm on my lips when going to sleep so my lips do not dry out. I like the warmth of the Aussie hose. I do not use the HH, I use it in passover mode.

I can do this, I will do this.

Might you be referring to this pricey little gem?

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/Resmed ... Vista.html

As expensive as it is, I have found it to be worth having as it is very flexible and can be used with just about any mask where some leverage needs to be reduced in order to change directions of mask hose.

President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.

DreamStalker,

Thank you,

I was thinking of the Swivel adapters. My Respironics one swivels nicely. That also works well.

Never saw the tubing itself before. That looks intresting.

The Aussie Hose has about a 1 1/2 inch longer stiffer part at the end. For The Hybrid it seems to make a difference to me. But I wll not rade in my Aussie Hose

I can do this, I will do this.

Sleepyred, Jeff and SelfSeeker,

Are you all using the Adaptive Flow version of the Hybrid? Also, is anyone of you using AutoPAP and monitoring the readings?

I don't know what the adaptive flow version is and I am stuck with a resmed light weight 7 - no monitoring. Just have to go with how I feel in the morning!

I don't know what the Adaptive Flow version. I'm using the one I bought brand new this week from cpap.com.

I do have AutoPAP, but I'm using straight CPAP with C-Flex. First night's readings look good, despite one major leak. I'll update when I've got a couple of more nights under my belt.

Meanwhile, I went out and bought a tube of lanoline today. Hard to find. Finally got it at CVS in the Baby section -- sold as a breast-feading aid!

I was having a small problem with the pillows staying put all night, too. I took a 27-inch round shoelace (not the flat kind), placed it the ridge under the top "bump" on the pillow, and tied it to the top part of the headgrear in the back. So far, that seems to working great at keeping them in place.

When I use my hybrid I hang the hose from a hook in the ceiling, off to the side of the bed. This keeps the hose out of my way but not in the way of the exhaust vent. Works great!

Found lanolin in the baby section of my pharmacy -- used to help nursing mothers! Well, I tried it last night and WOW! I slept through the entire night without any mask-related wakeup. No nasal leaks. Comfort.

Thanks for the tip! Probably good for any kind of nasal pillow.

cpapnewby,

I do not know if I am using the Adaptive Flow version. I got my Hybrid last fall. It came with the old headgear. I did get the newer head gear from inommed, what a major improvement they are.

I use he Hybrid in auto mode. I also monitor my readings.

My pressure needs change so it is hard to know if I need more pressure then wearing the NAII, but I think it may have gone up by 1 cm.

The leak rate at my pressures (auto set to 9-15) is in the low 50s. I was told that maybe I would not be able to use the Hybrid in auto mode because of the leak rate. My Remstar M auto, treated it like my NA II, only difference it was higher by 20 L/min.

Tha AHI seems the same. The Encore charts look similar.

I do not think they Hybrid negativley effects my treatment in auto mode.

Actually I did notice a deeper sleep.

Was that what you were wondering or do you have other questions.

2nd night impressions

Post by sleepyred » Sun Apr 15, 2007 5:39 am

Brenda - I did adjust my "hose hanger" - it is just made out of PVC pipe (someone on this forum gave some ideas a while ago) and turned the elbow piece from which the hose hangs over the bed and not to the side. I also gave it some more slack.

dreamstalker - I do have the connector from my activa which does lengthen and helps with swivel - that little gem comes in handy which each new mask I try!

Wearyone - I like the shoe lace idea - great - I will try that tonight. I used the Ayr - but the nose pieces kept popping out during the night. I have them set on the tall setting so I might try the lanolin - thanks selfseeker.

So I made it - whoo hoo through my 2nd night with my hybrid! My tmj and mouth feel so much better. With a little more tweaking - I think this one will work and no chin strap!!!!!!!!!!! Yippee!

Thanks!

Sleepyred

Sleepyred,

I am glad you had a good second night.

What interface were you using before that your tmj and mouth feel so much better with the Hybrid?

Are you using a mouth guard?

This for me is the hardest part. I did not have the dental device when I first used the Hybrid. I am still getting used to having something over my mouth area and the pillows being there with the mouth guard in. (A non issue with the NA II) Also I need to remember to put the guard in my mouth before attaching the Hybrid.

Why are you using the chin strap?

I like the lanolin better then the aqueous gels. The gels get gummy at least for me.

I do not think the lanolin would prevent the pillows from popping out.

Are they popping out because of the angle not being right?

I attached a rubber band from the top part of the shell where the head gear goes. The rubber band pushes the pillows downward giving a better angle for the pillows to stay in my nose.

Selfseeker

I was using the Mirage Activa nasal mask - which I love, love, love! I always go back to it, but hope the hybrid will work so I don't have to use a chin strap.

I have never used a mouth guard for my TMJ. My jaws sound like rice krispies when I chew - I just try to keep away from hard breads and pretzels. I am a heavy mouth breather - even during the day - have been that way all my life. Big teeth - wore braces, and have allergies which seem to stuff up my nose. So as a mouth breather - I had to get a chin strap - my mouth would open, make all kinds of noises and it drove my hubby crazy. So I used a simple sullivan chin strap which I had to put on so tight - it put too much pressure on my jaw.

I don't know if the pillows are popping out because of the angle. I had a deviated septum fixes and my hubby says my nares have different angles and one side of the pillow fits in just right and the other one should be angled back a bit more. I might have to cut them? But am not willing to try that yet!

I love your shoelace idea - might try that tonight.

What kind of mouth guard are you using?

Isn't lanolin a bit more sticky than the gel?
