Newbie with runny nose

Post by JohnMudie » Thu Jan 18, 2007 4:16 pm

I started CPAP use a week ago and developed a minor runny nose at the beginning of each session, no big deal. But now something, maybe the flu I am experiencing, or use of the CPAP has changed things a lot so my nose is running a lot even when I am off the machine.

So, do I stop CPAP use until it clears away?

My pharmacist doesn't have any nasal irrigation stuff. Suggestions for the simplest nasal irrigation solutions weclomed.

I am still learning how to use this wonderful archive of experience.
Whats the best way to search the archives so I can find answers to the above questions directly from the board?

Thanks
John

There are cheap saline nasal sprays that lots of us use.

Don't know if it will help with a runny nose, but will help with breathing in general.

Check out Roosters post in the following link.
viewtopic.php?p=135923&highlight=saline ... nse#135923

You should also read Snoredogs post in this link,
viewtopic.php?p=120416&highlight=saline ... nse#120416

Sometimes the runny nose is just your body(nose) getting used to the air blowing in. Some of us got used to it and no longer have the problem.

Searching: Type in what you are looking for(spelling counts!) then I select search for all terms, Then I select display as posts. I've read that some google it. Take a look at Blargs post here,

Hope this helps
Brenda

Hi John and welcome. I'm a newcomer as well. I also posted a few weeks ago in regards to chronic runny nose that started the very day after my 1st use of the Swift nasal pillows. Most people do get used to it or it stops but mine unfortunately has not. I have used Mucinex-D which works great to stop that but I can't stay on it forever. The day I stopped taking it, it started up again. Check another pharmacy for a sinus rinse, that may help you. Also, several experienced folks here recommended AYR Saline gel with aloe which is very soothing. Just apply inside nose with a q-tip to help protect the passages. I feel I really did try everything but it's been 5 weeks and doctor wants me to stop wearing nasal pillows and give the poor schnozz a rest. I got a different mask today but hopefully will be able to try Swift again in a few months.
Also, in regards to your "search" question, at the top of the page, you can click on Search and put in keywords to find many past posts that are extremely helpful. Also, be sure to click the yellow lightbulb for lots more info. I wish you the best of luck and don't be afraid to ask these nice people questions!

Are you using a heated humidifier? When I first started CPAP (without a heated humidifier) my nose ran like a badly leaking faucet and I would sneeze all day long. Once I stated using the heated humidifier (set at 3) those symptoms have gone away.

I have been using the humidifier since day 1 in June '06. For me it just started with the mask change. Oh well......

Changes in ten days since joining this forum

Post by JohnMudie » Sun Jan 28, 2007 9:24 am

I am extremely grateful for the strength hope and experience found in this forum. I gained a lot of hope when I understood that there were others out there who had been going through what I am going through..

Since starting on this forum,
viewtopic.php?p=140759&sid=2d1643021eaf ... 4959580d5d
I have started using NeilMed nasal sprays, asked my dcotor for a humidifier (didnt work), repositioned my bed so I can hang the hose above the bed and am hanging in there getting used to the machine.

The only improvements I have noticed so far as a result of using the CPAP 21 days ago are
1/ Waking up with gentle breathing as opposed to panting
2/ Waking up feeling refreshed
3/ Sleeping longer
The fatigue is still there, climbing two flights of steps, wipes me out and I am napping one hour a day in the afternoon.

I am going to see my lung specialist next week and have a secodn sleep study. I hoping that the second sleep study will produce worse numbers so that I can qualify for Medicare insurance.
Thanks for all your support and information

John

John, a humidifier would probably help alot. Lots of people start getting a bloody nose over time without a humidifier.

Ask your lung specialist to prescribe one for you. I can't believe your regular doctor refused to order one - especially when you asked for one.

If nothing else, you could get one from cpap.com for $150 . You don't need a prescription for one if you are buying it yourself.

Sorry for your problems.
