Opus and the Comfort Lite 2

Post by apneaicinisrael » Fri Dec 22, 2006 3:20 am

Thanks for all the info on the new F and P mask. If there are any Canadians out there who have tried the Opus and also have experience with the CL2, can you make a comparison?

Noise of exhaust?
Comfort of nasal cushion?
Seal/Leak?
Stability on the head?

It looks really promising, and it sounds like it has the soft silicon that I like so much with the CL2 nosepeices .

Is it on the European market yet?

That's all my questions,
TIA

I have both the CL2 and Opus. To answer your questions (and please remember that this is just my personal opinion) I offer the following:

The exhaust noise on the Opus is essentially zero. If, however, you happen to roll over such that exhaust ports are somewhat blocked by your pillow blanket, you will hear some exhaust sound, just like you do with the CL2.

The pillows on the Opus are of essentially equal comfort to that of the CL2. Both are of soft silicone. NEITHER the Opus or CL2 are as comfortable as the Breeze pillows. Specifically, the Breeze pillows have a bellows effect which I really like. However, bith the Opus and CL2 are comfortable.

I have found that the Opus tends to seal better than the CL2 -I've had difficulty with CL2 in that it does not adjust well enough (the metal bar in the CL2 nasal pillows does not allow for enough bend of the pillows section) and I've had to do some lab-ratting with thin fishing line to get the correct bend in the CL2 pillows.

Once corrected, I was able to reduce the leak on the CL2 significantly. Leak on the the Opus is almost zero for me.

The big difference is in the headgear. CL2, once adjusted properly, is, for me, VERY stable in that when I lay on my side (as I do for most of the night) and is not affected by my face against my pillow. The Opus, like Swift IS affected by my face laying against my pillow. This is because the Opus relys upon the semi-rigid headgear that comes down along the sides of my face (like Swift) whereas the CL2 does not have headgear that comes down along the sides of my face.

Overall, as much as I like CL2, I have not been able to get really good fit due to the design of the "J" shaped pillows section. I don't use my CL2 very often even though I do think that it is a good mask and is certainly a big improvement over the original CL (of which I had two).

The Opus is, for me, significantly better than Swift, and somewhat better than CL2. If you tend to spend the majority of the night on your back and don't roll around much, Opus should be excellent for you. If you roll around alot, like I do, Opus is a good mask relative to stability and quite comfortable. The headgear is minimal and the nasal pillows are nice. If the pillow that you sleep on is particularly firm, or if you move alot during your sleep, you MIGHT find the Opus to be lacking in stability or, a bit uncomfortable in that you will feel some lateral pressure against your nose.

I stopped using Swift because of the uncomfortable lateral pressure against my nose. The bit of lateral pressure that I feel from Opus is not bothersome enough to make me stop using it.

Overall, I like Swift the least, CL2 is in the middle and I like Opus the best.

Hope this helps.

Willsucceed.......

Greetings from Cajun country.....

My compliments to you for such a quality piece of work. Your "review" was very helpful.

Although I'm using a CL-2 now, I intend to experiment with other masks...the Breeze, for example......and maybe even cobble together the best parts of each in order to come up with an improvement over my present system.

Thank you for taking the time to give all of us your valuable knowledge and opinions.

Gerald

Gerald:
Interesting that you mention cobbling together a mask out of several pieces.

I've taken the nasal pillow section of a Breeze, detached from the plastic and metal outrigger section, and used the velcro straps on the headgear from an Adam Circuit.

I'll get Rested Gal to help with posting a link to a photo of this... so, what I have is the soft headgear of the Adam Circuit with the tube and nasal pillow section of the Breeze. It is VERY comfortable (I like the design of the Breeze pillows best), light weight, stable and, best of all, no back-of-the-head irritation from the Breeze outrigger AND no face marks nor instability when side-sleeping. Further, the Breeze nasal pillow section is quieter than the Adam Circuit nasal pillow section. I think this is an artifact of the somewhat round shape of the Breeze nasal pillow section as compared to the rather angular design of the Adam Circuit nasal pillow section.

I'd be using this setup now if I did not have an Opus.

Willsucceed.....

I think I have most of the pieces that will let me put something together that is similar to what you've described. I'd very much like to see any pictures you have that will help the "cobble" process easier.

Thanks!!......................Gerald

WillSucceed, Thanks so much!
Really, thanks for your piece by piece analysis, it really helps. These are details that only a fellow nasal pillow papper can appreciate!
I am a stomach and side sleeper and the CL2 has been good though the occasional leak issue is bothersome. Swift, I found, pushed on my upper lip and was not comfortable for me with the side and stomach sleeping. Yes, all the masks have their pluses and minuses. That's what makes this "so much fun"!!

Thanks again for your devotion to the cause,
Happy Holidays to you,

AII

Ever thought of designing and marketing cpap masks
You and Rested Gal could get team up and probably make a fortune.
A couple of cpap users designing masks ,now wouldn't that be a good idea
