hubby has sleep apnea too ?

Post by lzrgroup » Wed Sep 20, 2006 1:06 pm

My hubby snores like crazy and does not get a full nights sleep in ages without getting up to go to the bathroom etc. I was unable to convince him to go see a Dr or have a sleep study done. I did convince him to use my spare auto bipap machine for a week or so, when he first falls asleep the numbers are low about 4/5 out and 7/8 in, after he is sleeping the numbers jump up to about 8/9 out and 11/12 sometimes 13 or more in

does this mean that he has sleep apnea too, or am i just crazy ?

please offer your comments so i can show them to him

thanks
lisa

I presume that when you say the Auto BiPAP, that you're talking about the Respironics machine....
Do you have the cardreader and software?
If not, having those would still be much less expensive than a sleep study and would let you see the apneas and hypopneas, snores, leaks, etc.

Best wishes,

My husband also has apnea symptoms and agreed to try the machine, but I don't have auto pap and I was afraid I'd kill him with the wrong pressure setting. Mine is only 6 -8 and I have no idea what his would be!

He won't doctor for apnea because he says he doesn't want to know. Men. I'm really happy that I went for the study, as CPap has improved my quality of life.

MEN??? Hey!.....don't get me started.....
Just kidding.....sounds like me up until a few years ago.....then I found out the solution to my tiredness was going to be fairly easy.

Seriously though, a pressure of about 10 would give some idea. That isn't a great deal of pressure and is fairly easy to breathe with. Do you have any way to monitor it? Your machine comes up as an S7 Elite. Does it give any statistics?

Please tell him for me that he needs to find out and the solution is painless.

Best wishes,

Den

Another way to do it is use your CPAP prescription to get an Auto CPAP and try him on that one. Then you would have a back up machine if he doesn't need it.

I was going to do this with a stubborn close relative (male) but he isn't ready to admit that he has a problem yet. But I am ready when he finally comes around, which I really hope will be soon. He had tonsils and adnoids removed as a child and snores very, very loudly. He gets up in the middle of the night, stays up a while then goes back to bed a few hours later.

To me this is classic. Just like the nightly bathroom trips (heck, I would be there is one of those in there too!).

I was referring to Winkin's comment on only having a CPAP when I wrote the comment above

Can you print your data? If so, take it to your dr. Might mean a referral later, but he might luck out and they would just give him one. My people told me the insurance company demanded a sleep test. YUK. I did it. I love my machine. Test was inconclusive.

BY THE WAY, THE REASON HE DOESN'T WANT TO GO IS BECAUSE HE DOES NOT WANT TO BE AWAY FROM YOU!!! Don't grin, I am serious.

My wife has an Auto BiPAP too. Long story about her getting a BiPAP when they titrated her at 6. She was on Ambien too...strong dose ...it was her 3rd test and she couldn't sleep. they said CPAP, Her data won the day. I took it to her dr. showed him the data on my laptop...70-80 days or so with an IPAP of 12-14 at times. THEN I gave him a printed brochure off the internet so he could spell it right. God love him, he did and with that data being written in her file, she qualified. The good guys win one......

As for both of us using a BiPAP, it is neat. We laugh at night, put on our masks, lay down on our backs and hold hands while we go to sleep. I love it. She is the opposite of some women...I have to do it first, then she will happily put the mask on and she used the system all night the first night.

Good luck, have him read this...bite his tongue, DO the stupid test. If you do not like the arrogance of some of the sleep labs, call around. They were telling me I had to be there at 6pm or 7pm to be hooked up. I asked why, I don't go to sleep until 11 or later. Finally I found one that said they would have their tech come in when I did. YEAAAAA.......the rest is history.

My wife went there, our daughter will go there...and our son when we convince him he needs it. So tell hubby it is not painless....being away from you wives is always painful, but in the long run, it is well worth it.

Good Luck..

Installing Software is like pushing a rope uphill.
I have Encore Pro 1.8.65 but could not find it listed
under software.

I LOVE the SV.

You should be able to set that BiPAP up as a CPAP.....inhale and exhale at the same pressure.....then monitor with the software.

lzrgroup,

Is the machine he is using a Respironics? Or what?

If it's a Respironics, do you have the card reader and software? Software will show you if he is having apneas or not. Just the pressure numbers is not conclusive.

Keep working on him

Lisa,

Persistence can be the key. I've thought my hubby had apnea for quite awhile. Last year when I was so tired and thyroid medicine didn't help it - doctor sent me for a sleep study. I figured - I'll sleep great there and they'll find out hubby is keeping me awake. Well, no, I have apnea. So, a year later - and hubby finally decided he wanted some of that rest. Plus, his sleep is getting worse and I'm more tired again too, since he's waking up a lot. Anyway, he finally went for his sleep test and goes back next week for his titration. I think seeing me get through the problems, finally start sleeping better, and seeing that it's really not a big deal to get in bed with it at night has helped him finally go for himself.

Plus, he knows that I'm rested enough now to help him with all of his decisions, adjustments etc. What would our beloved spouses do without us? Of course, I can't do without him either, which is why I'm glad he finally went.

Don't ever give up - just keep loving and encouraging him, and he'll come around.

Best of luck,
Karen

I don't know about your numbers, but my thought is:

TAKE OUT A VERY, VERY LARGE LIFE INSURANCE POLICY ON HIM A.S.A.P.!

Seriously, though, maybe a list of some (not even all) of the reasons that policy may be a wise move? The list of conditions that CPAP affects is very long. Maybe if you mention, as a commercial about the condition comes on TV, something like, "Can you believe that GERD can ALSO be improved by CPAP?" (Sorry, hemorrhoids and birth control have no correlation with xPAP that I know about!)

IMHO, your husband IS afraid of something. We can only fear that which we do not understand. The more you can get him to understand, the better.

I sure can. I use to have a problem with GERD... no longer a problem with CPAP
