Resmed S8 auto with Comfort Lite 2 mask?

Post by gertrude-mcfuzz » Tue Sep 19, 2006 12:16 pm

Hi, I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I tried to do a search and didn't come up with anything useful.

Does anybody use the Resmed S8 auto with the Comfort Lite 2 mask? If so, what kind of mask do you tell the S8 you are using (in the settings)? The options are all Resmed masks (Swift, etc), and one called "standard mask".

Thanks!

S8 and mask setting

Post by charlyb67 » Tue Sep 19, 2006 4:39 pm

Hi!

I was actually just talking to my clinician today about this subject. I use the S8 Elite and CL2 with the direct seal nasal pillows now, but when I started out I was using the ComfortSelect nasal mask. I asked her if I should have that setting changed to something else. She told me that with the S8 that is only used to identify the mask you are using when they print out a report. If you do not have any of the specific masks that are listed (Mirage, Activa, Swift, etc.) you are supposed to just use the Standard setting.

Hope this helps!

Here is a chart I made up of the masks that I could get the info for. I can't vouch for the correctness of all the data, but I believe it to be good. I use the Swift setting and at my pressure it works fine. My leak rate with mouth taped is about .06 L/S (as read on the S8 LCD) which I feel is OK. I try to keep my total leak rate below 40 L/M (read out + mask bias leak).

As you can see from the charts the bias leak rate is a function of the pressure so use the one that gives the lowest result.

One thing I have found out is that using some settings (Ultra is where I saw it) the auto on/off function did not work. If you don't use this feature then maybe it will make no difference.

Let me know if/how it works out.

Bob

EDIT: After looking at the chart displayed maybe I should explain it - the first column is the pressure and the second column is the mask's bias leak rate in L/M.

That may be the only reason they use it, but I think you will find it necessary as the S8 shows the leak rate in L/S after the bias leak rate of the selected mask has been subtracted.

Bob,

Thanks for the reply. I can't see the chart you posted. Is it an attachment?

Thank you ever so much, Bob. Given this chart, actually at a pressure of 8, the CL2 Simple Cushion would be closer to the Activa for leak bias than the Swift or the Standard.

And so another question, oh mighty mask guru,

Do the Respironics machines also subtract the leak bias? For instance, would the leak rate pretty much be the same using the CL2 w/a Resmed as w/a Respironics or would the leak rate be drastically different because the Respironics didn't subtract the leak bias?

The leak rates would be considerably different between the Respironics and the Resmeds w/the same mask and pressure.

I'm not sure WHY Resmed likes to play so coy w/the bias leak rates for their masks but no where in my Swift literature did I find any information on its bias leak rates unless it is on the CD that comes w/the Swift that I never bothered to look at.

IF it is to encourage us to use their Resmed masks they are barking up THE WRONG tree!! FIT and COMFORT to our INDIVIDUAL faces and needs makes that a STUPID move on their part. We all need to find the mask that gives us the best fit and most comfort w/the least amount of leak. The LAST thing I care about is what manufacturer makes a particular mask.

I'm heavily invested in the Resmed products w/an Elite, an AutoSet Vantage, 2 Humidaire 3i integrated heated humidifiers, AutoScan 5.7 and ResScan software, the cable reader needed because I LIKE them .... but the ONLY Resmed mask I own (and do NOT use) is the Resmed Swift.

The only information I could get out of Resmed about mask leak rates and mask selection on a Resmed was that at 8 cms the Standard mask selection's bias leak rate was .24L/s.
