Hybrid Mask

Post by cybergoon » Wed Sep 13, 2006 2:48 pm

I have been reading peoples posts about the hybrid mask and I just called my DME (Lincare) and ordered one. It will be in in about a week. I had actually decided that I was going to attempt to modify my current mask to get rid of the forhead rest. I like to watch TV for about 30 minutes prior to going to sleep and I can't do that without my glasses. I'm really excited that there is finally a FF mask that you can wear glasses with! I just hope that it works as well as the people who like it say

Do a search of the forum for hybrid mask. I read all the posts I could find on this mask. The day I got it I played with it for a good while and got it adjusted just right. It's the only mask I've ever used and I love it. I hope you'll be just as happy with yours!

Keep in mind that it does utilize nasal pillows ... just in case you are using the FF to avoid pillows.

Ditto! Of all the things I miss the most, it is being able to read or watch TV with the mask on. Well, I guess that's really all I miss. I was just thinking yesterday about how I could "fix" the mask I have. Actually, I did find that I can wear my glasses under the mask, but then I have to take the mask off to get my glasses off -- and they are also mooshed into my face. I just bought a barely used Hybrid from someone here and I'm looking forward to it arriving.

Okay, here's a question I've kind of wondered about the nasal pillows. If a person doesn't really like them, can you just kind of plug up the holes with cotton balls or tape or something and just use the face mask portion for the mouth?? (I don't have it yet, so I don't know what it looks like in person.)

When I watched the video on cpap.com, it says that this mask can be used as an oral interface, a nasal interface, or a combination of the two. That kind of made me think that it can be used without the pillows. I think it would be really hard to keep yourself from breathing out your nose if it didn't use them, short of using nose plugs. Though that might be better than taping the mouth for those that have mouth leaks. I will use it with the pillows, as I do still breathe through my nose sometimes. Usually after having the mask on for an hour, my sinuses clear up and I can breathe.

Once the mask comes in, I will post my comments on it here.

Although there are times when it is absolutely unavoidable, mouth breathing should be avoided whenever possible. Mouth breathing results in a high rate of dehydration and generally facilitates the tongue to fall back into the throat and cause the very obstructive apnea you are attempting to treat.

Trying to use the Hybrid for only mouth breathing would require more than just plugging your nose ... it would also require sealing the openings of the pillows which may or may not be an easy task.

If you are a chronic mouth breather, you should make every effort to clear your sinuses in order to learn to breathe through your nose and use a genuine full face mask while learning ... IMO.
