Hybrid mask- possible remedy for corner mouth leaks

Post by beneyw » Thu Aug 10, 2006 6:00 am

I am using the large mouth interface and pillows but as jaw drops during sleep leaks occur at the corners of the mouth. This is something I am trying; the use of 1" paper tape but without sealing lips.

1. take a sufficient length of tape and adhere to area just under the lower lip and parallel to it with enough length to just extend beyond lower lip on each side.

2. take a shorter, maybe 1.5 inch length piece of tape and attach perpendicularly in a vertical direction to the corner of each other piece of tape pulling up as you do. Do this for each corner making sure the vertical pieces of tape slightly cover the mouth corners. The upper lip is NOT taped. Then apply the Hybrid mask as usual. The upper lip will still be free to breathe but for me the corner leaks seem to be stopped.

The idea here is allow the mask to continue as a mouth breathing unit but not have corner leaks.
This may also work for FF masks with corner leaks...

I use two 2.5 mm spacers to reduce the radius of the mouthpiece. However,
it tends to 'whistle' at times. I'll be trying your 'fix' tonight. I think it may be
better..

Thanx,

Age & skin have conspired to give me two creases at the corners of my mouth. I also have a very tiny blister right under my nose. My nursey solution is OSTOMY paste to smooth out the creases and cover the blister. A little dab-l-do-ya.....or in this case 3 little dabs.

Good solution, beneyw!
I have noticed that ,on those rare instances when I sleep on my back, gravity does pull my relaxed facial tissue backward and create a little corner leak at the mouth like you described. And I can see where the tape fix you discuss would sure keep that tissue from drifting back during sleep.
Great idea!

I should have mentioned...I am an exclusive back sleeper and was trying all sorts of ways to end those nuisance corner leaks...hopefully, this might be the solution.

wow, that seems like a really good idea. Sounds like a mini-face lift (!).
I always get the corner mouth leaks when I sleep on my back.
The way I've dealt with it is to just sleep only on my side (which works).
I can't wait to try that taping trick to see if I can sleep on my back again.
thanks for the great idea!

Dumb question, but what's a 2.5 mm spacer, and how, exactly, do you use it?

Should answer your your question that I didn't think was dumb
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body totally worn out and screaming,WOO HOO what a ride!
