Goodknight 420E - advice please!

Hello,

New to the board. I've been using a CPAP for about 13 years now. I just recently received a GoodKnight 420E from my insurance and DME. I'm wearing a ComfortClassic Mask with Headgear, and my CPAP setting is 16.

The problem that I am having is that the air pressure will drop abruptly in the middle of the night with no warning. I've tried using the machine both with and without the humidifier. I feel like if I tighten the mask down any further, I'm going to start sawing through the skin to the bone

Has anyone else experienced anything similar with this machine? I'm sure that it has something to do with a mask leak, but I have tightened down the mask as far as possible. Of course, I wake right up when the pressure drops suddenly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My 420E did that to me once, going up and down at something like 2-3. Scared the daylights (nightrest) out of me, and I contacted to DME the following day and had it replaced.

The details screen of Silverlining showed an amazing, non-leak-related drop in pressure to far below any acceptable minimum, and nothing like what a leak looks like.

If you have the Silverlining 3 software you can check the phenomenon in the details screen.

I would expect the 420E to be perfectly capable of handling any leak your previous machine handled - I'ld actually expect an auto to be better at that than a older non-automatic machine. So, unless you are 100% sure that its' a leak - get the machine changed.

Leaks wake us up, with the machine howling at full steam. If you're still convinced it's a leak - change the mask.

Dave,

I think that problem can sometimes happen with a 420E if a person takes an occasional very sudden, very deep breath...perhaps even without a piggybacked heated hose (discussed in the thread linked below) being involved.

I had this problem with mine and I bought a better power supply which cured the problem completely.
Incidently the new power supply is a regulated 12V 4Amp power supply (twice the current rating of the standard product).
I think the one PB supply is only just good enough.

I had a 420e for several months. I had a few problems with inconsistent pressure and found that the inner sensing tube was occasionally getting blocked by the rubber end of the hose. I just needed to pull the inner sensing tube back a bit or push it forward a bit, so it cleared the base of the rubber hose end.

Having said that, I really didn't like the 420e. Many here do, but I found it to be noisy and cheaply made. I sold mine at a considerable loss, but I'm much happier with my Remstar Auto. I did find the Silverlining software to be great at reporting though, despite the fact that it did so using archaic serial communication.

Thanks to all for the advice. I used a 12v 4a power supply last night, and it worked like a champ. I was able to recreate the problem by taking a very sudden deep breath while using the delivered power supply. Attempted it again with the new power supply, and the machine worked just fine. I had a great night of sleep last night with the 420e.
