Articles about Acid Reflux, Sinus and Nasal congestion.

Post by RestInSeattle » Fri Apr 28, 2006 1:46 pm

Used this to answer a PM to another user, but upon reflection realized that this information may be usesfull for the rest of you that may potentially be having struggles with Acid Reflux disease (GERD) and Sinus infections, etc..

http://healthlink.mcw.edu/article/968784529.html

Extract from the article "Recent reports indicate that acid reflux into the pharynx plays a role in the development of sinusitis in both children and adults. There was also a study showing that patients with GERD were less likely to get relief from sinus surgery. In patients with chronic sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses), a large number of acid reflux events reach the top of the esophagus near the sinuses compared to a control group. While acid reflux probably does not reach all the way to the sinuses, it could induce inflammation of nasal mucous, blocking the sinuses. The exact cause-and-effect mechanism of acid reflux and sinusitis has not yet been established. "

Extract from article "Reflux of stomach acid into the throat and nose is a common underlying cause of chronic sinusitis. This type of acid reflux often occurs without heartburn or indigestion, which would otherwise alert a patient to the condition. Many who experience reflux also experience heavy postnasal drip and sometimes a choking sensation. Dietary and lifestyle changes can reduce reflux and, therefore, improve some sinus conditions.
"

http://www.sinusinfocenter.com/sinus_ca ... eflux.html

Article extract "Reflux occurs when stomach juice (acid) is released back up into the esophagus (feeding tube) between the throat and stomach, sometimes as high as the larynx (voice box), pharynx (throat), or even higher – causing heartburn, sore throat, phlegm, post-nasal drip, cough, choking, and/or hoarseness. " and also "EERD can both mimic and cause otitis media (inflammation of the middle ear) and sinusitis. "

http://www.pediatric-ent.com/learning/p ... yngeal.htm

Note the extract of symptoms "Otitis media (ear infections), Sinusitis, Chronic nasal congestion "

I could continue, but there is a very large number for medical journals and other articles that show sinus problems, congestion, ear infections, choking and other symptoms all releating to acid reflux.

Hopefully this information will come in handy for those that have found their sinus surgeries to be not as effective as they would have liked and that the cause could be an underlying problem of GERD (acid reflux). That's not to say that all who have sinus problems also have GERD, but it is something worth checking into.

Acid Reflux-Ugh!!!!

Hi,
I think this would be helpful to all you who suffer with this condition. My wife also had a hard time with acid reflux until she was introduced to a nutritional product which has helped her considerably to the point that she has even tested the foods she once couldn't eat and - no burning.

I don't know if i can name the product here so if you are interested in this product, you can contact me at winstoncrichlow@hotmail.com

I hear ya. I was diagnosed with acid reflux back in April. I've been on both Xpap and Prevacid ever since. It's doing the job that's for sure. Haven't had an issue since........

Thanks for the links to some very informative articles, RestInSeattle.

Untreated, or undertreated, acid reflux disease can also be a big problem in getting cpap treatment to work effectively. The esophagus getting nightly "baths" of acid can make the tissue swell, becoming more rigid. CPAP air is designed to push aside soft tissue. CPAP treatment can be rendered ineffective if the air is trying to push against a brick wall of swollen tissue.

Case in point - loonlvr's saga:

I recognise all those symptoms & thanks be I went on an anti-gerd medication the week before I started xPAP - it has worked magnificently. The symptoms - all of them go for as long as I take the the medication, daily. It seems to have no side effects.

I would *hate* to be doing xPAP with those symptoms & I hope anyone with them recognises them & gets medical advice. There are many very good treatments that work very well.

Thanks for posting this thread

Thanks for this! I have horrible GERD and Esophogitis. I take Nexuium twice a day and still have to take Pepsid complete as well.
My sinuses which have always been fine are now a disaster area. One side is constantly blocked, and it has caused my pressure to go from 8 to 12. Also, my AHI and HI have gone up and I know it's from the uncontrolled reflux.
My Doc has advised surgery, but told me if I could loose some weight I may be able to avoid it. So, I lost 45 pounds, and if anything, it's getting worse.
I would love to chat with anyone who's conquered this problem.

Lee Lee,

The usual thing that happens is we all pipe up & name the medication we are using for ourselves to great effect - but I guess only a good doctor can recommend whats best.

I occasionaly get sinus trouble but that seems to hapen rarely since I was put on Pariet tablets (one tiny tab a day).

When I read that others are taking medicationbut still have serious challenges, I wonder why what appears to be a common caused disorder, gets these less than effective resultts.

Good luck on this.

DSM,
I think it's because when a condition gets really severe , even medication, no matter how highly touted, can't control it.
I'm pretty sure the surgery is the answer for me, but I guess I've been in denial for a long time. I have two autoimmune diseases (Lupus and Sjogrens) and after reading these excellent articles, I'm positive this is what is conributing to the the problems.
Thanks for your good wishes.
