How to open Resmed S9 to perform repair?

Post by TooGroggy » Tue Feb 14, 2012 1:20 pm

My Resmed S9 CPAP unit had one too many rushed TSA encounters which resulted in a broken knob (the one to right of the screen). Actually, what broke is the plastic sleeve that holds the knob down in place. I would like to try to glue it back together. But that requires opening up the machine which, I suspect, means unscrewing/unbolting whatever is inside those deep holes at the bottom of the machine. Does anyone know what sort of tool I need for that? Thanks.

I would not touch it, but file a claim with the airline--if it's not too late.

The one fastener that is visible requires a hex key. What I can see of the other three fasteners (if that's what is at the bottom of the recesses) is a flat surface over which the various hex keys and screwdrivers I've tried have had no effect.

You can be sure of one thing- it's not a tool you have in your toolbox or can buy at the hardware store. ResMed does not want us to be able to open the case. See if the DME can help, if they do any repairs.

Hi...
Legacy Repironics cases open with a phillips screwdriver. I'd guess either that or as Snuggles suggested, a torx screwdriver. Resmed isn't going to invent their own hardware just to keep people out.

I wouldn't open it unless it is out of warranty. By opening to repair yourself, you invalidate your two-year warranty on the machine.

Government regulation (FDA etc) around Therapeutic Devices is what madates restricted access.

Cheers,

Thanks for the suggestions.

It turns out that the case is secured only by the single screw that I had already removed and a bunch of plastic tabs on the sides and back of the top and bottom panel.

For anyone interested, here's what under the top plastic cover.

This is the part that broke:

It goes here:

Hopefully, I'll be able to glue it back on.

How is the knob held on? Is it captured by the cover, screw, etc.?

The rectangular component in the last picture normally has the metal rod shown in the second picture sticking out of it. The knob just slips onto that rod. So if you slip a flat object under the knob (as I just did on my other machine), you'll be able to take the knob off.

If you haven't already done it, here's what I suggest. Put a small amount of super glue on the plastic on the shaft. Then hold the blower upside down as you fit the shaft into place and hold while the glue sets. The reason for holding it upside down is to keep glue from running down into the potentiometer, or switch, or whatever it is, and gluing together some parts you don't want glued together!
