Progress report

Post by Brian2 » Thu Jan 24, 2008 12:48 pm

Hi everyone
I have just got back from by first evaluation. I have been using my APAP machine for 38 days and the following readings have been given:
IBefore treatment i was have 74 events per hour.

Pressure: Median 7.3 95th percentile 9.9 Maximum 10.9

AHI & AI Events/hour
Apnea index 0.8
Hypopnea index 6.6
AHI 7.4
% time in Apnea 0.2
Average daily usage 6.43

I first got this readout from Resmed sleep clinic in Oxford (UK)and then went to the NHS sleep clinic at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford. Both said that the readings were good and that I don't have to come back unless i have problems or need equipment. The next appointment is one year from today.
Has anyone got any advice/comments on the results. Both told me not to bother reading the results on a regular basis unless i start getting prblems, but I know many of you down load your own results and monitor your results, again any advice would be welcome.

Looks good to me. I personally don't mind seeing a slightly higher than "5.0" AHI with a resmed autopap if it's mostly because of "hypopneas".....since resmed autos usually report more flow limitations as "hypopneas" than other brands do.

That doesn't mean one brand or another is more or less accurate at identifying "hypopneas." It's just a difference in the way the various manufacturers design their own definition of "hypopnea" into their own machines' algorithms. Any resmed machine I've used always reported 2 to 3 times as many "hypopneas" for me, thus inflating the overall AHI as compared to using a Respironics or Puritan Bennett machine. I simply began ignoring the HI when I used a resmed machine. Or I'd just mentally cut the AHI in half.

So, with that in mind.... I think your numbers look fine.

You can monitor your results each morning without even having software, you know.

Hold down the right and left buttons together for several seconds. Then go into the "Efficacy" data to see your results. You have to do that before 12 noon.

You can also go into the clinical setup menu, if you wish. Hold down the right button and the down-arrow button for several seconds. If you decide to prowl around in the clinical menu, I'd strongly suggest not making any changes your first time through. Just write down everything you see in the window for each menu item. Every word, every symbol, every number. It's good to have a record of all your original settings in case you decide to change something and later want to go back to the way it was.

Not that you need to make any changes, imho. Looking good.

If you want to be sure you're completely out of whatever menu you're looking at, hit the button under the word Exit about three times.
