R.G, Re straps on Activa: what kind and how attached?

Post by FL andy » Sat Mar 26, 2005 1:36 pm

Rested Gal,

Would you please tell me what kind of straps you used to stabilize your Activa mask and also how did you attach those straps? Were they velcro or some other material? Did you sew them on?

Thank you much,

Andy

Hi Andy,

I don't use any extra straps on the Activa (ResMed's nasal mask.) I use the Activa "as is", wearing the straps that are already on it very loosely.

Perhaps you meant to type "Aura"? If so, here are links to all the pictures I've retouched, showing the way I add extra straps to the Aura:

This is the way I wear my Aura - with straps added at eyebrow level.

For the straps up at eyebrow level I use the long "optional" straps that come with a Breeze. The already have a bit of velcro on each end of each strap. But any kind of homemade straps would work. I probably wouldn't sew a homemade strap around anything. But sewing velcro tabs to the ends of homemade straps would work.

If the eyebrow level straps are not enough to keep the nasal pillows in place (especially at high pressures) you can add the "pantyhose leg" trick I use to keep the nasal pillows absolutely still.

Click here to see both sets of added straps - the ones I already use at eyebrow level and the panty hose leg strap wound around the bottom corners of the nasal pillows.

One leg cut off a pair of pantyhose provides stretchy, soft material that worked comfortably securing the nasal pillows against the nares perfectly, when I experimented getting the Aura to hold a seal against very high pressure (20 cm H20 !!) and toss 'n turn sleeping. I don't have to use the pantyhose leg thingie myself. The straps added at eyebrow level keep everything in place fine for me. I worked up the "pantyhose leg fix" just out of curiosity to see if there was a way to make the nasal pillows hold a seal against very high pressure. It did.

Front view of Step 1 - adding "pantyhose leg" at the pillows area.

Step 4

Andy, I do believe that most men are going to need an "Extra Large" nasal pillows size for the Aura, to get really good results. Unfortunately Aeiomed does not have the Extra Large available yet - I don't know if they've even started developing them.

In the meantime, some people (men and women) who are not getting a good enough seal with the "Large" pillows might benefit from using both straps (eyebrow and at the pillows) to maintain a seal.

While I'm using velcro for the eyebrow straps, and a cutoff pantyhose leg for the pillows strap at the bottom, any kind of material that suits a person could be used. Stretchy headband material, Ace bandage, lingerie straps, strips of T-shirt material...whatever a person wants to try.

Thanks rested gal,

Oh my! Old age sure takes some getting used to, but then I only get older and more senile.

Yes, my friend, I meant the Aura.

From my experimenting, I think the eyebrow strap may help my leakage, I mean the mask's leakage. By reading th's post about his phone conversation with Mr. X from Aeiomed, I understand that many users of the Aura are not placing the Aura in the proper position. And that position should be higher and not touching the face.

But I tried that, and the only thing that seems to work (for me anyway) is to keep the part of the Aura, (already I forgot the part's name), that come down the forehead from the headpiece, keep it closer to or perhaps touching my face. And that is right where your eyebrow strap would go. So, young lady, you already figured out my problem before I knew I had a problem.

It may be that I also need the X Large pillows, but I like the Aura and want to try your forehead strap before trying to return it to cpap.com

Isn't it nice that Mr. X is trying to make arrangements for returns with Aura suppliers!!! Aeiomed is a nice company to deal with!

Thank you very much,
Andy
