Flood Limit Change

Post by bendauphinee » Tue Mar 06, 2018 9:49 am

Hello everyone.

After our most recent spam attack, we've decided to change the flood limit (the amount of time between allowed posts).
It was set to 30 seconds, but has been increased to 1 minute.
This means you will not be able to make posts faster that this, and should help slow down any future spam attacks.

Too bad you can't set a lower limit for people with an established age/postcount and a higher limit for new accounts.

Apparently, one minute is not enough to stop the bot.
Maybe 5 or 10 minutes?

Never meant to stop the bots...just slow them down.
To really stop them we need to figure out how to stop them from ever registering in the first place.

Would you want to wait 5 minutes between posts of your own? That's what would happen if the flood limit was changed to 5 minutes.
You could only post once ever 5 minutes. Whatever the flood limit is...it pertains to everyone's postings.

Just a thought.
Probably not so good.

Would be a good thought if the flood limits could be limited to only new members for a period of time.
People like you and me and the others who have been here longer would maybe have shorter flood limits but I have no idea if that is even possible...like what PR suggested.

I have no idea what is or isn't available on that side of the forum software.

I spotted a new spam this morning for some sort of basketball thing...and I went to see when the spammer registered and it was 4 days ago...but the spam early this morning was their first post. These guys plan ahead and are sneaky.
He of course is now blocked from posting again and I will be on special alert for more sports spam stuff.
I check all the new member posts. If I see a post by someone I don't recognize...I go read it.

I don't read all posts in all the threads so I might miss something within a thread...so I still need you guys to also keep an eye out and report spam if you see it. Then I will get the notification to go look and then I can deal with it.

Almost reported this thread as insurance spam, based on the subject line.

Flood insurance--yep, often a scam.
CYA for lenders.
It got so expensive here that we canceled after the mortgage was paid.
2 years later, we got flooded.
It only took about half of one year's premium to cover the losses--
--none if which would have been covered under the insurance we had canceled.
Win, win.

Are people signing up or bots? Forum software should have built in anti spam stuff like having to answer questions to register.

Could also create a new user group for new people under certain number of posts. First few posts should have to be approved by moderator before being seen on site. Makes more work for moderator and kind of sucks for new users but would probably stop most of issues.

Apparently the deky didn't help/
If the Spammers are repeatedly from the same domain (IP address), they can be blocked from even accessing the web site using the .htaccess file on your ISP.
Also your ISP may have some other solutions.
Maybe your web site software offers some other tools?

The spammers are SPOOFING THEIR IP's,
using a different one for each phony registration.

Just curious, How would you know that?
I'm sure either the ISP or the software supplier for phpBB would be able to help.

Either Pugsy or Ben already said it.
Apparently you are not as obsessive a reader as I.
And I did not quote it because I am LAZY.
Or all worn out from reading.

spammers have programs that change the ip and the computer system details with each post. you could look at the posts and never know they are the same person.
for instance on a not so deep level i have a program that will download a whole website. websites don't like and usually block grabber software like that. in the setup i can set it look like i'm a person just using internet explorer, firefox, etc, rather than a grabber program.

I would suggest the "captcha" checkbox that is used on the registration form be changed to something harder to get around by software if the bots are doing the registration.
