Could it be as simple and learning how to breathe with mask? I only ask because I'm having same issue. For the first 10 minutes laying down I feel like I'm hyperventilating but when my breathing slows down everything feels much better.

When I first lay down, I breath in for a count of three, then breath out for a count of three. I continue to do this for a few minutes until I fall asleep. I can look at sleepy head graphs and tell when I fell asleep because my breathing pattern changes. My respiration volume and rate change.
