Humidifier Reservoir

Post by pikov22 » Mon Mar 20, 2017 1:05 pm

I think that my signature has all the info about my CPAP etc.

Lately, I've found some strange behavior around my humidifier. Even though the CPAP is on about the same number of hours each night (5.5-6.5) the amount of water left in the reservoir varies from almost empty to 3/4 full.

I haven't changed any settings.

Any ideas? Do leaks affect this? If so, how do I check for leaks?

Thanks.

The humidity in the air, the temp in the room. Several things can change the amount of water that is used during the night. We don't think too much about the humidity in the air unless you have a way to monitor it. A rainy day will be different then if it has been dry for a week

The temp doesn't change (good thermostat!). I'll see if I have a hygrometer laying around and check the humidity. Thanks.

It is possible that it has a slow leak from a crack likely near the screws for the metal pan. My bro was having similar problems and then after they broke his reservoir at the nursing home, I replaced it and those odd near empties went away. I know when he has a near empty now it's due to leaks - heck, you can hear the leak. But now there are explainable events.

If on some nights you mouth breathe you will use more moisture than when you do not.

The norm is to use all or almost all of the water in the res. My concern is those nights when I use almost no water.

If the ambient room humidity is already fairly high the humidifier won't need to crank out as much moisture so the water usage will be minimal.

On nights when it rains here I might barely use any water but on other nights I might use almost all the water.
The machine starts with the ambient humidity and then tries to add enough moisture to maintain whatever level you have set it at. If the moisture level in the air is already fairly high the machine won't need to add much moisture.

I've ordered a hygrometer and will monitor the humidity level in the bedroom.

I have the ResMed Air Sense 10 and when my humidifier was going bad it was using more and less water night to night. Then it started leaking so I replaced it and it went back to consistent water use. Insurance pays for a replacement humidifier chamber every 6 months. They last longer but i get one every 6 months anyway. I have 2 new ones still in the box so I have one at all times, in case it dies before 6 months.

Thanks. I get whatever new parts I can get as often as they will let me get them.

Incidentally, I git a hygrometer. the RH is 15% and the temp is 78 deg F at my desk!!

At what setting? And are you using a heated hose?

Humidity set to 3 on a 60 series machine with the heated hose attached is for 90%.

It does seem like we would expect more water consumption but maybe not. We are never given any guidelines as to what to expect in terms of water consumption.
You might keep a log and see if you see a pattern or not.
