OT - Statins and You
Re: OT - Statins and You
Interesting that my mail order pharmacy keep reminding me to contact my doctor about using statins (which I don't use).
Not sure why they are doing this unless they are getting paid to do so.
I was taken off of statins because
I almost died because of using them 2 years ago. The causes...

Re: OT - Statins and You
I think there's some valid points in the criticism, but I don't have enough memory of scientific statistics to address all of their concerns. Nevertheless, I think there is a sufficient lack of evidence for the value of statins as primary prevention, particularly in women that I am quite comfortable with my personal decision not to take them. But to be fair, here is a criticism of the study:

Re: OT - Statins and You
My guess is that there's some governmental or corporate "quality indicator" that requires pharmacists to send these reminders when certain things (other drugs prescribed or diagnostic codes) indicate it. The sad part about this is that may prompt people to ask their doctors for statin prescriptions when they aren't on them already. Imagine the doctor who refuses to prescribe statins--if that patient later has a cardiovascular event, they can sue the doctor for that refusal. So if you go in and ask your doctor for statins because of such pharmacy reminders. you can bet that the patient will walk out with a prescription, needed or not.Krelvin wrote:Interesting that my mail order pharmacy keep reminding me to contact my doctor about using statins (which I don't use).

Re: OT - Statins and You
Despite the fact my cholesterol level dropped like a stone in a few wks after starting statins decades ago, I stopped them within a very few years because I believe they were responsible for my gastritis which I'd never had prior to that... I restarted statins for a very short time 20 yrs ago having been told the newer ones were better, but stopped those too within a very short time and... I'm still here . And not sorry at all that I stopped, regardless of where my HDL and LDL levels are. Sometimes you have to do what your MD says you shouldn't if you feel it's right for you (however that sounds in the face of my telling everyone else to see their doctors ).

Re: OT - Statins and You
I did the statin avoidance thing for a long while and ended up with a triple bypass. I know that statins are not ideal. I also know that there other cholesterol drugs out there that work very well but are prohibitively expensive. I've managed to get my levels down to 4.1 using a combination of 10mg of rosuvastatin and 10 mg of ezetimbe which is a drug that reduces cholesterol absorption. I no longer suffer any side effects. I also use kyolic aged garlic which has been shown in university studies to have a very positive effect on cardiac health. It has other benefits as well.
The one thing we must remember is that cholesterol plays a significant part in how our immune system works.

Ask your doctor if stupidity is right for you .... or know that:
"This topic bears an upsettingly parallel reality to that of nutrition “science” in that virtually all health care providers have no understanding of it and seem to only reiterate conventional wisdom (e.g., “LDL is bad,” “HDL is good”)."
The straight dope on cholesterol

Re: OT - Statins and You
Holden - what makes you think you wouldn't have had to have a bypass even if you'd taken statins? How do you know heredity and/or a 1,000 physiologic causes weren't responsible?

My post was for anyone who is interested in learning what cholesterol is and how it works in the human body since the thread topic is about statins, a drug that affects .... well, cholesterol among other things.

Re: OT - Statins and You
Since I am not an MD, I can't make a recommendation for anyone else, but I will not begin statin therapy until at least two weeks after they burry me.
More than twenty years ago at a family Thanksgiving dinner, my cousin who is a year older than me was laughing at me for taking all the vitamins I was taking. Than the topic changed to his quintuple bypass.
This week my cardiologist shared the results of my stress echoed test. She said I was in good shape and my heart was working better than a lot of folks younger than me.
