SmartStart for ResMed S8 AutoSet Vantage

Post by Joemid » Wed Oct 04, 2006 6:17 am

Hello everyone, I'm very new here so please forgive me if this question has been asked recently (I did a Search on terms first, but found no results).

Yesterday I acquired a new ResMed S8 AutoSet Vantage, which is quite a step up from my old Mirage V, let me tell you. However, I can not figure out how to start "SmartStart" on my own. The manual says this is something that the clinician can do for me -- but does not tell me how to make this change (I do not have access to the "detailed" menu). Since my clinician is only available Monday through Friday between 9 to 5 and exists about 40 miles from my workplace I find this extremely inconvenient.

I envision that this change would be relatively easy make -- maybe I am fooling myself? Is there anyone who has been able to change this on their machines without having to go into the clinic?

Thank you,

Joe M.

For the ResMed Machines, Pressing and holding the right and bottom keys for 3 seconds puts you in the clinical menu. Make sure you write down every setting before changing.

SmartStart is one of the options you can turn off and on.

Thank you ThunderSnorem! I recently tried to access the Menu and found that I could not access the full menu tree as indicated by my manual.

That little button trick did the trick.

Thanks again!

Seeing Resmed efficacy and usage data too

Oh, and by the way, holding down the left and right keys for 3 seconds allows you to review nightly efficacy data (AHI, AI, and HI) and usage data in hours:minutes. That way you can review your treatment's effectiveness.

that feature is disabled if you select Mirage Full from the mask selection menu as the anti-asphixia valve it has is incompatible with that feature (consult the manual).

I'm not finding the SmartStart feature works w/the Swift either. It does w/my F&P HC 407 but not w/my Swift.

The SmartStart feature on my Elite works well with my Swift.

Not that it helps you any, but thought I would throw it in there.

When using the Swift make sure it is selected in the "MASK" menu.

Ok. This particular forum topic has been a great help! Thank you all! I have a resmed s8 and have a problem with the on/off keypad switch. I just became aware of "smart start" and after reading this, I have finally got my machine set to that by changing the mask setting from MIR FULL to STANDARD. My question is, is it harmful to the machine or myself to set the mask setting to "standard" when I have a full mask, the Mirage Quattro? Snoredog earlier stated "the anti-asphixia valve it (the mask) has is incompatible with that feature". This smart start fixes my on/off button problem for me but I don't want to misuse the machine if it is harmful to me or the machine. Thanks so much!

It won't affect the machine, but, its possible that it could affect the reported leak. Very insignificant...especially if you are not following your data. Since you have an S8 machine, following your data is very difficult unless you have a specific card reader.

The mask choice feature to standard at worst will maybe make your leak numbers look a little worse than they are.

Full face masks have a higher intentional vent rate that gets subtracted prior to leak reporting.
Standard mask choice will have a slightly lower intentional vent rate to be subtracted prior to leak reporting.
So the leak number reported might be a little bit higher than it normally would be...that's it.
It isn't a huge difference though.
Not enough to worry about.

I haven't looked at my data in ages. Been on the thing for probably 5 or 6 years now. I sure appreciate the info. Makes me feel a lot better. This solves my aggravating on/off problem so now I don't have to fiddle with it for 5 minutes to get it to turn on at night or off in the morning. Thanks again. This site is a great help to us CPAPers!
