New Xpap Smell

Ok, how many thousand miles does it take for the new xpap smell to go away? Seriously tho, there is a plastic smell to the air. Anyone else experience this?

Have you washed the hose and mask ? If you have I'd say about 1 night but who knows. Maybe you have one of the earth friendly models made with 90% recycled plastic . Mine lasted maybe 1 or 2 nights.

What model is it ?

Remstar Auto w/Cflex. It has gotten better after 3 nights so maybe there is hope, but it is coming out of the unit that way...

That seems to be typical, Mikesus. I took about 3 or 4 nights using it for the "new" plastic smell to disappear completely from my machine - same brand/model as yours, I thought. (There's no "Pro" in the name of the Remstar Auto with C-Flex.) I suppose a person could also turn the machine on during the daytime during the first day or two - let it just run to hasten removal of the new smell.

Having tried a lot of masks in the last few weeks, I can tell you that in my experience, the odor comes from the mask, not the CPAP itself. I can also tell you that some masks seem to hold it longer than others.

The Activa held a mediciny smell for quite some time, but since that one was from the sleep lab, and had been repeatedly dunked in disinfectant, we can't hold that against it.

I find the swift is particularly holding on to it's plasticity (is that even a word?).

I agree, though, a good scrubbing should take care of most masks pretty quickly.

I originally thought that but disconnecting the hose and checking the output of the machine itself was the culprit.

Anything new, mask or machine, can smell new. But the "new" plastic smell Mike's talking about with the Remstar Auto/C-flex is definitely the machine itself - for a few days. According to people who have called Respironics about it, it's not harmful and will disappear in a few days. That seems to be so.

Well, then, it's both. Because the smell has long since disappated when I use my Mirage Ultra, but when I use the Swift, it's nearly overpowering.

But I suppose since both have plastic parts, it's not surprising.

Liam, who just hopes they don't have aerosol cans of "new CPAP smell" when they repair them.

Well how about this....my wife is an impecable housekeeper and everything is vacummed every day including the furnace filters...When I use my ResMed APAP Spirit I breathe just fine but If I take of the mask for anything I get a stong smell of hot dust. You know that smell you get in the fall when your heat turns on for the first time. Is the air in the APAP filtered that good? or is the air in my house that bad?

Probably both. I know there are HEPA filters available for the various CPAPS, I don't know if they come standard or not. But they do filter out things like dust, so you're probably getting a much reduced amount of dust during the night, and waking to a refreshed recognition of it.

Where as your wife, like those who live in Hershey PA, has gotten used to the smell of chocolate (er, dust), and no longer even notices it.

That would be my guess, anyway.

Actually it depends on the vacuum cleaner... The average vacuum kicks up a lot of dust into the air and it takes a few hours for it to settle again. Hepa filtered vacs are better and don't stir as much stuff up...

I have a AustinAire Hepa filter for the bedroom and I have my Remstar on top of it with the air intake on it right above the outlet on the Hepa. I have noticed that I wake up with very clear sinuses, til I unmask...

Yesterday I received a new Auto C-Flex. I used my old hose and mask with my new machine last night. I was surprised at how strong the smell of plastic was when I turned on my new machine. Yes I still smell the plastic this morning. I’m sure the smell will dissipate in a few days.
