Oh where oh where have my lost hours gone?

Okay, I'm curious about something. When my RT delivered my machine on December 2, it had 1 hour useage (I assume setup/checking out, etc.). We probably spent another hour on operation, fitting and adjusting mask, setting and turning off ramp (couldn't breathe on lower pressure), etc. I now have 161 hours of useage and 153 hours of compliance! Although I usually make one quick early morning trip down the hall before getting up for the day, I don't turn off the CPAP--just unhook the mask from the hose--because it is also hooked up to oxygen and humidifier, both of which, according to the directions, are supposed to be disconnected prior to shutting off the CPAP. The machine screen flashes to show there is a problem with the mask hookup and doesn't (I assume) count that time towards compliance. But that still doesn't add up to 6 or more hours! Where did that time go???

(It's a PB420G)

not a bad question actually

I have done a couple of experiments to see how the REMstar records compliance data and computes the greatly worshiped "nights >4 hrs" statistic. And also how the "minutes" are reported on the SmartCard.

It seems that one is "punished" by about 10 minutes for turning the blower ON. That is, if you use the blower for 12 minutes you will get 2 minutes of compliance. 4hrs and 9min gets you 3hrs and 59 minutes and NO added "compliance days". Doing 5 hrs TWICE gets you only one compliance day. Not a surprise. I also find (contrary to some previous threads) that I can turn the blower off and back on several times during the night and I still get MOST of the time accumulated, it doesn't seem to hafta be necessarily "consecutive".

In your case, about 160 hrs use suggests 20 eight-hour sessions or 40 four-hour sessions? 40x10min= about 6-7 hours, your "missing time"? maybe.

There is a lot of "slop" in my back-of-the-envelope calculation. I'm not sure if your machine reports time the same as my Respironics machine. I'm not sure if the "penalty" is really 10 minutes or something else, it was based only on one brief experiment. Maybe somebody else has the leisure to verify my data. Suppose the PK uses a different algorithm. Don't know.

I have not ruled out that I may have been abducted by aliens while wearing "the mask", hence more lost time. That always worries me. I'm sure they find us unspeakably attractive.

Lastly, I hope nobody is a SLAVE to "compliance". That is just SOOO SOOO un-American. Maybe some rental agreements are directly connected to the STUPID compliance figure. Unfortunate. (a good reason to OWN the machine outright). I'm sorry that some clinicians, doctors included, are so hung up on compliance, and less focused on the clinically more interesting data that the machines are putting out. To them I say BAH HUMBUG!

(and Merry Christmas to all)

I don't know where the hours are going - but I do know why some of the Dr's, Clinics, and DME's are hung up on compliance. Certain insurance companies are rating compliance. In the case of a DME. They may need to prove compliance to get full payment for the machine after a period of time. I know of one case where the DME even took the machine back because the person did not have adequate compliance.
