Condensation: Is it mask dependant? Other influences?

Post by SelfSeeker » Sat Sep 30, 2006 6:23 am

Is condensation mask dependant?

Does the level of humidity set for the xPAP make a difference or is it more the temperature of the room?

Does the snuggle hose help.

Would moisture in the mask block exhaust holes?

Why does it show in manuals to put the tubing over the head board, would that not cause more rain out?

I can do this, I will do this.

My disclaimer: I'm not a doctor, nor have I ever worked in the health care field Just my personal opinions.

Rainout is the result of condensation: humidity in the warmer air touches the colder sides of either the hose or mask, and becomes water droplets, the eventually turn bigger, and rain into you face. The same thing happens to your glasses when you enter a warm house after having been in the cold, thought they don't get to "cryout", only foggy...

cpap.com has a video about it: https://www.cpap.com/downloadVideo.php?VGID=16

Rainout is mask dependant - the Aieome Headrest (Aura) is (rightfully) notorious for rainout.

Rainout is also environment dependat - if you hose or mask are cold because the room is cold, you'll get more rainout.

Rainout depends on the combination of pressure, and humidifier heat as well. There is less rainout when the pressure is higher, and when the humidifier is set on lower.

I bought a heated hose http://www.sleepzone.com.au and added a snuggle hose to it, which is just great. In some environments, with some masks, the snuggle hose on its own wont' be enough.

I sleep well with my combination of heated hose, snuggle hose and Aura - I love it.

The comfort curve comes with its own hose so a heated whose would be out. I did get a snuggle for it.

ozij, are you not afraid of s fire or something with a snuggle on a heated hose? Or is it ok? Just wondering.

I checked with Sleepzone and they said it's OK to use an additional cover. They didn't think it was needed, but it wouldn't hurt anything. I use a second cover just so I can wash it weekly. The cover that comes on the hose does not come off. If someone knows a trick for getting it off please let me know.

I am not afraid of a fire - but take that as a statement about myself. The hose +snuggle hose is never more than plesantly warm. And even when I've forgotten to disconnect it it's never been hot. I think it depends on the power supply - and I'm using no more power than they instruct.

By the way, people have been using the comfort curve with a hose adapter plus a normal hose on non-respironics machines. Extending the hose doesn't effect the pressure - certainly not if you're using an automatic machine.

I used a swift mask last winter with a simple cover over the hose and did not experience any major rainout problem. I switched to a comfort lite 2 with nasal inserts recently and now find a major problem. By early morning I am forced to remove the mask as water is actually leaking onto my face. I guess it's time to invest in a heated hose.
