Mask adhesive to prevent leaks

Post by oceanpearl » Fri Mar 09, 2007 4:34 pm

A few months back several people were posting on this topc.
Has it worked or anyone and if so what is the name of the adhesive?
I just want to go back to sleep!

I was half joking yesterday about a mask/skin friendly caulking to prevent leak. I'd want in on something like that!

There was a discussion several months ago of the use of diving mask sealant--I forget the exact name.

Apparently, while an inspired idea, it doesn't really work well. Do I sense a business niche for a talented inventor?

I would suggest some "honey", but you might wake up with ants all over your face. ... And definitely wouldn't wear it if I was out camping. Oh My ...

The stuff is Mask Seal. It's made by Marine Sports Manufacturing (813)754-3744. I got some and it does work. Warm soapy water in the morning gets it off your skin. It comes in a tube like chapstick. I think it was about $6 per tube. I got mine at West Marine.

Found it;

Wow, Great stuff! How long have you been using it? Have you found out if it can cause any damage to the mask?
Thanks!

As I woke up yet again with puffy lids due to air leaking into them from my mask, I pondered the use of micropore tape tonight. Am I totally crazy or has anyone tried taping leaky spots?

I have tried both - and I STILL use the mask sealant as mentioned above - it does work and I don't have to wrench the mask so tight at the bridge of my nose for leaks - it does not harm the mask at all or your skin -

I have tried using tape to stop leaks and it is a nightmare - you put one piece on then have to put another piece on, etc, etc. and it didn't work for me anyway

Looking at the link from the original post almost 1 year ago, it was mentioned not to get in eyes. Has anyone tried it on a FF mask at top of mask where it leaks into corners of the eyes? I'm curious if it stays in place well and if I have to worry about it running into my eyes.

Thanks.

It might be good to use on the Hybrid (mask portion), if people can tolerate the nasal pillows but have leaks around the mouth.

The tube says avoid direct contact with eyes. Contact with eyes may cause mild irritation.
It's made for sport and dive masks. These masks go closer to the eyes than an xpap mask. In the original thread about this sealer, it was said that it melts in hot weather. I keep mine in the fridge, and once it's on the mask it does not spread or melt. It only takes a very very thin coating to make the mask seal. I did not have to reapply it evry night. It stayed on the mask for a couple of nights(even with BZK wipes being used daily on the mask).
I did try using it to seal my lips shut(instead of tape), didn't work.

Mask sealant/Benzoin/med adhesive - the winner is?

Post by Wistful » Sat Mar 10, 2007 6:42 am

Very interesting!

I was reading the previous posts that mentioned the mask sealant, Benzoin Tincture and Medical adhesives. I would love to hear from people who use them and find out what there vote is!

Anyone with respiratory issues from any of them? Skin irritation?

This is what I have been looking for!!!

I have exzema. I haven't had a problem with the mask seal on my skin. When I use the hybrid I sometimes use the sealer on the corners of the mask. I get red marks(patches of exzema) from the mask touching my face but no marks where the sealer is. I can't have any of the headgear touching my skin, so I have padacheeks on every mask(won't even attempt to use a mask with out them!). The only tape I can use is the Kendalls Tenderskin Tape. It is similar to the 3M micropore tape but must use a different adhesive. It seals well and doesn't take the skin off in the am.
