New apap problem

Post by BuffaloAl » Fri Mar 31, 2006 7:56 pm

Hi everyone, I haven't been here for a while..

I just got a new PB420 apap a week ago to replace my 6 year old resmed cpap. My problem is that every night it shuts off completely for about 3 seconds. It does this several times a night. I think it is trying to seal leaks, as I feel it press back on my face as it shuts off. Of course it wakes me up every time it does this which is mighty annoying.

I got rid of nasal pillows and went with a mirage mask half a year ago, which I was using without problems except for the leaks.

Purchased PB here because evil DMEs wanted " $180 a month for 13 months"

Do you use the Aussie Heated Hose? There have been previous posts regarding this problem with the PB420e in conjunction with that.

A couple of links to past threads which may help you:

Do You Use 420E and Heated Hose?

PB 420E Stops - maybe?

First, I do not use the heated hose, so that's not part of the problem. Some random guesses on the other link are pretty far fetched. My house or yours does not lose power six times per night, and even if it did, wouldn't I have had this problem with the old fashioned resmed. But thank you for directing me to it. For a mathematician, I am not able to figure out how to find old threads on a topic. Pretty pathetic.

Next, the PB is above me on a bookshelf headboard, so it's quite an effort to get up and look at the screen in the middle of the night.
Also, yes, it is completely off. Zero pressure for about 3 seconds, then it comes back on. I have not found info in the manual on this, but I thank you for your efforts.

unit shutting off

It is certainly possible that there is something wrong with that particular machine. I would call cpap.com (since that is where you bought it) and ask about getting it replaced.

Could water have gotten into the unit and blocked the sensor tube?

Have you tried putting the machine lower than your head to see if it still cuts out?

If you got it at cpap.com, contact them they are very good about replacing the defective machine promptly. That machine is cute but it has not been trouble free by my experience.

Service is good which is why I keep buying from them. First class service in my opinion.

I agree - contact whoever you bought it from.

Also: I've noticed that the machine's socket and the plug that goes into it are sometimes loose - make sure that absolutely nothing touches the plug or wire, so that is doesn't jiggle loose.

If it's not a loose connection, I hope it's a faulty power supply....

Good luck, and let us know.

O.

I've heard that taking a sudden, very deep long breath can, in some cases, cause the 420E is to shut off. Never have had it happen to me with the two 420E's I've used, but...have heard that can happen.

From the other posted thread about this problem regarding electrical pressure tripping up the processor of the unit, I decided to plug the machine into an ordinary line conditioner, which is similar to a surge suppressor. Since the 420E still shut off a few times during the night, I can rule out electrical malfunctions of any kind: surges, spikes, drops, and nonuniform sine waves. Ha ha, and I didn't even need an oscilloscope, take that engineers!

A Question for other 420E users: Which do you do first in the morning,
1 Take it off?
2, Shut it off?

If you take it off first, does it shut off completely for 3 seconds and then come back on?

I take the mask off first.
The machine never shuts itself down.
