DME Machine Swap for Refurb

Post by Zeecat » Thu Aug 14, 2014 12:26 pm

My DME has agreed to swap my (new) Icon+ Auto for a refurbished ResMed S9 Autoset. I'm considering it depending on the warranty that accompanies the refurb.

Any thoughts? Is it worth it? Does anyone have experience with refurbished machines?

most of my experience is with flat out *used* machines, and it's been fine.

they probably 'refurbished' it by *maybe* taking it apart and cleaning the inside, and then testing it's pressures....

if you want a autoset instead of an icon auto, and the price isn't too bad, I'd say "go for it"

I requested the machine change, mostly for the expiratory pressure relief. I'm hoping it will help make me more comfortable using nasal pillows. I had to back them into a corner and get them to admit that they had no contract with F&P and that they use the Icon because it gives them the best profit margin.

I wouldn't be afraid to use it. Like PR most of my machines have been private party purchases of used machines. My current S9 Adapt had nearly 3,000 hours on it when I bought it last Dec and just went out of warranty.
I would ask about warranty though....just to make sure everyone was on the same page. It might have a full 2 year warranty with it or it might have a limited warranty.

I would want to see the "run hours"
Big numbers might help you negotiate extras or encourage them to look for a more gently used unit.

If it is a refurb it could very well have been reset to 0 at the factory. They can do that at the factory if they have a mind to so I don't know how accurate hours of use might be. It could also have been a refurb due to some sort of failure a month into someone's therapy.

I would also want to clarify if it really is a refurb because that implies it went back to the factory for some work and not just the DME taking a used machine and calling it a refurb.

the epr or pressure differential between inhale and exhale can make masks wiggle...

I tried (and am now looking to sell) the piliaro q, and I could feel it swell on my nose when I inhaled... my ffm does the same thing... though I'm currently playing with a ps of 6, and epr only goes to a max of 3.... but it can be noticable.

Wiggles? Because I don't already twitch enough in my sleep

Ask about warranty, what 'refurb' means to them, if there is any knowledge of run hours. Wonder if I could get fries with that...

And to think I thought all of this would be plug and play.

Odd Update Re: DME Machine Swap for Refurb

Post by Zeecat » Tue Aug 19, 2014 9:05 am

The DME changed their minds and scheduled an appointment for me to just pick up a new machine. No refurb. I'm not fighting it, I just don't understand it.

As long as it's not costing you any more $$, take it and RUN!

Thanks everyone! I swapped machines today. Very minimal paperwork and I have a new ResMed s9 autoset with humidifier and climate hose. I'm not sure why but I'm not asking questions either Nothing else changed, my rental charge and compliance days are still the same. I should be done with compliance in 20 days, which will end my rental as well. I'm still skeptical because it's a DME and insurance but...

Now, I need to figure out how to use this machine! If anyone has tips they would be greatly appreciated. My DME explained the basics but didn't know much else. I didn't push because the the real experts are here on the forum, living it, not pushing machines according to $$.

As a side note, my DME said she has received a large amount of complaints about the F&P Icon+ and that the F&P Rep was inundated with complaints at the recent sleep convention.

first, congrats! and, well, the general advice, if you've been on a fixed pressure, is to either stay on that for a few days, in cpap mode, or if you want to play with autoset, set the minimum pressure to a couple of cm less than you're used to, and the max to a couple more, and see how things go for a couple of days... eyeballing your data in sleepyhead (or resscan if you're masochistic) to see how you're doing

Do you have the clinical manual? If not here it is.

There's a nice little video here
