How much sleep do you need?

Post by BleepingBeauty » Tue Jul 29, 2014 8:43 am

Everyone's different, of course, but I found some of these statistics interesting. Didn't realize that "too much" sleep on a regular basis can be problematic in the long run. FWIW, I fall into the 7-8 hours-a-night group.

Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

Dx 11/07: AHI 107, central apnea, Cheyne Stokes respiration, moderate-severe O2 desats. (Simple OSA would be too easy. ;))

I'm best at 8 hours plus a 30-40 minute siesta at 12:30 to 1:00 PM. And I try to go to bed at 10:00 - 10:30 at night. Seven weeks into CPAP and I did a single 7 hour sleep last night. Then another hour plus. Feel so perky it's annoying today.

Great to see you, BB!

I guess I probably fall into the 7-8 hour as well, but I sure haven't figured out exactly! I think my sleep is so disturbed because of pain and discomfort that even 7-8 hours isn't always enough. All I know is I never wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go, no matter how little/much I sleep.

7 < sleep needed < 9

That is, 7+ hours or 8+ hours. I also find myself way more refreshed if I had 1+ hour of lead time to relax before bed.

This is with CPAP. Before CPAP, 9+ or 10+ hours was the norm, and I still feel like shit all day.

And another view - sleeping naked.
An Australian study concluded that some forms of insomnia can be provoked by improper body temperature regulation at night. Another study showed that the regulation of in-bed body temperature could significantly help in reaching a deeper sleep. In one study in particular, Dutch scientists placed thermosuits on participants in order to lower their skin temperature without affecting core body temperature. As a result, the participants had an uninterrupted sleep and spent more time in the deep sleep stages.

I thought I would get more sleep after I retired; no, about the same--average about 7.5
Before cpap, I usually only got 4 or less, and felt really horrible.

I agree with the premise though.

Has anyone else found they sleep "cooler" with CPAP. I swear I don't throw the covers off or toss and turn as much. Is it the actual temperature of the fact that I'm sleeping deeper I wonder?...

This has been true for me, too. And I'm the odd-ball who actually likes the feeling of the air blowing into my nose. I've always been a person who could not STAND to re-breathe air. My husband likes to snuggle up under a blanket, with it even over his head, in the winter. I can't STAND that. I have to make a "tunnel" in the blanket to let in cool, fresh air to breathe or I feel like I'm suffocating. I hate scarves or clothing up around my nose/mouth, no matter how cold it is. I gotta have fresh air. So I think that blowing of fresh air effect helped balance the claustrophobia effect of wearing the mask, for me.

Tia, when I was using the FFM I had two fans on either side of the pillow to keep my head cool. The claustrophobia was made much worse by the heat and humidity of the FFM air too. The body cooling effect is only with the P10s and only after I've gone to sleep. As I fall asleep I often get overheated.

But remember I am overweight guy, which does NOT help.

I am about to try frozen reusable ice cubes in my humidifier tray to cool the air even more as I drop off. I'll let you know how that goes...

Both directions actually. I used to sleep with heavy socks on because my feet were always cold, now they get kicked off when I start to drowse off. I don't toss and turn anymore since night one unless I am stressed out which unfortunately is a lot at the moment.

Same here on the weight. And 40 years old, so hot flashes have started arriving. Just when I get the OSA dx and start trying to sleep better, here comes night sweats, LOL! Can't win.

I alternate between turning the humidifier off and setting it between .5-1.5. I don't like warm, swampy air in my face either, lol. Do share how the ice cubes trick goes!
