S9 Auto Off doesn't seem to be working
S9 Auto Off doesn't seem to be working
I usually don't use the auto off, but this morning, I removed my mask, and waited for my S9 to turn off. It just kept blowing air.
The auto on works fine.
This is a new machine that I was given to replace one that became noisy. The auto off on the original machine worked.
I played with it this morning, and found that instead of shutting off, I get a message about a High Leak.
There isn't a setting for having it start automatically, but not stop automatically. There's just the SmartStart on/off option.
Any ideas?

Re: S9 Auto Off doesn't seem to be working
Try setting Smart Start to "ON" and Leak Alert to "Off" and see if it works the way you want it to.
I don't have my S9 to verify but I am pretty sure that's what I used to get the S9 to come on when I took a couple of breaths and turn off in about a minute if I removed the mask.

I've gone through the clinical manual, and can't find any reference to Leak Alert or anything like that.

No Leak Alert setting unless you have an S9 VPAP model.JeffL wrote:I've gone through the clinical manual, and can't find any reference to Leak Alert or anything like that.
On my VPAP Auto, if you turn on Leak Alert, it disables SmartStart. In other words you can't have both SmartStart (which includes the automatic stop) and Leak Alert turned on at the same time.

Re: S9 Auto Off doesn't seem to be working
Sorry, I didn't click on the link to see if you had the VPAP. I just assumed that you had the leak alert feature since you mentioned something about a high leak message. My bad.
With the S9 machine SmartStart is the only way to have Auto On and Auto Off that I know of.
It's either on or off. When I let it do the Auto Off thing it would turn off probably in about a minute. I no longer have the S9 VPAP so I can't test it.
If SmartStart set to On...allows for the machine to turn on with a few breaths then that part is working properly
When set to on if it won't turn off when you remove the mask after a reasonable length of time then I don't know of anything except that there seems to be a problem with the sensor.
Perhaps someone who does have a S9 can do a little experiment and actually time the amount of time it normally takes for the machine to turn off when the mask is removed.

Experiment? Sure!Pugsy wrote:Perhaps someone who does have a S9 can do a little experiment and actually time the amount of time it normally takes for the machine to turn off when the mask is removed.
OK, just tested on both the S9 Autoset and the S9 VPAP Auto. It took 7 seconds on both machines to stop when the mask was fully removed and the nasal pillows were unobstructed (i.e. massive/full leak)

My S9 AutoSet also takes only seconds to automatically turn itself off.bosstow wrote: Experiment? Sure!

Re: S9 Auto Off doesn't seem to be working
I don't see anything that applies.
I have the S9 Autoset, set for Auto with a pressure of 5 to 12.
The SmartStart is On.
I just happened to get a call from my supplier about an hour ago, and I asked about it. For what it's worth I was told that the newer versions don't turn off automatically anymore. I guess I could verify that with ResMed.

I'm fairly certain that is NOT true what they told you regarding newer versions not turning off automatically when SmartStart is enabled.JeffL wrote:I don't see anything that applies.

As a test, you could increase your minimum pressure to 7 or 8 (temporarily only for this test), then start it up and take your mask off once it comes up to pressure and see if it then is able to auto shutoff. Then put your min pressure back to 5 after the test.
I'm wondering if when you happen take off the mask with a low "current pressure" (especially since your profile says you are using pillows and the chart above states that pressure < 7 can cause auto off not to function) that the auto off won't work. Your minimum pressure is below 7.

With 7 cm and epr 1 does not shut down
With 7.2 cm and epr 1 does not shut down
With 7.2 cm and epr off it will shut down
I have pillows and slim line
Edit: The pressure may vary depending on the model. The S9 Autoset cs-a is 6 cm in force.

Re: S9 Auto Off doesn't seem to be working
I noticed with my S9 since I had to bump up my pressure to 8 the auto on works fine...however the auto off does not work.

Re: S9 Auto Off doesn't seem to be working
If you set epr to 1 it should work, not 2 or 3.

Re: S9 Auto Off doesn't seem to be working
Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but if you are using a nasal pillow mask with small size pillows the S9 may or may not turn off automatically.
It's a known, not sure if problem is the right word. The auto off feature, activated ironically by turning smartstart to on, has problems with nasal pillows. Three seconds is the longest it should take to turn off.
Hope that helps, good luck.

Re: S9 Auto Off doesn't seem to be working
Quit looking! I got to the bottom of this.
First of all. I don't know who the bigger idiots are, my provider, who told me that the auto off doesn't work in the newer models, or the person (who will go unnamed) at ResMed who replied to my inquiry.
I stated in my message to ResMed the SmartStart was enabled, and that my provider told me that auto off doesn't work in the newer units.
This is what I got back from RedMed:
Thank you for contacting ResMed. We recommend that you contact your local homecare provider to confirm that the Smart start/stop feature is enabled on your new unit since that feature is available on all of our S9 AutoSet units (new and older versions).
Based on Bosstow's info and suggestion, I experimented by altering the min. pressure. What I found was it will turn off at a pressure setting of 8 (takes a count of 6 or 7). From 7.2 to 7.8, I can hear the airflow drop, and it becomes less steady, but sometimes it will turn off, and sometimes it won't.
Looking at the pressure graphs in my ResScan charts, it looks as if I float around on either side of 8.
