CAN'T BUY COMFORTABLE HOSPITAL MASK

Post by newname » Mon May 20, 2013 2:04 pm

I recently was in the hospital with A-fib and they gave me a Fisher Paykel FFM to wear and told me I could take it home because they just throw them out after each patient. It was the most comfortable mask I have ever used. After trying to figure out which mask it is, I found out it is only sold to hospitals as a one patient mask.
It's the RT040. It fits under my chin. Unfortunately I did not take it home. FP told me they don't make that style to sell to patients-only to hospitals!!!
HOW UNFAIR IS THAT!! It doesn't make sense to me that they would make a comfortable mask and not sell it to cpap users.
They've designed a comfortable mask, but we can't get it unless we are hospitalized. It's called the FREE MOTION mask.

It's sold in boxes of 10 - and is ventless . ..wonder if this is simply a throw away mask and is not designed for use for 6 months or more.

There are 3 F & P full face masks that fit under the chin....compare your mask to these.......

This is a disposable mask made for hospital use.

Of the other three, this one fits more comfortably.

Looks like FP 431, except with a blue elbow and glider. {edit: I corrected the part number:}
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/fisher ... -mask.html
Messed up again: I linked to the rt041, which IS non-vented (how can that work?)
Aside from the vent, it looks like the hospital version(s) may have a non-replaceable cushion
(and maybe a flexible frame.)
So does the 040 have both types of vents; or what?
Maybe just the fixed cushion?

I'm sorry, I should have specified the anti-asphyxiation valve,
which is not present on the blue elbow. (hospital use only)
The mask you show has carbon dioxide vents, as do all home masks.

The hospital mask is recommended for 7 days use. Then to be discarded. This could get very expensive as a daily use mask. They don't make replacement parts for it.

I can see where the integrated cushion is smoother, allowing for a more comfortable fit.
FP seems to have that problem with their design, as the cushion tracks tend to leave welts,
if you're not a perfect fit.

You need to be very careful with hospital masks and CPAP machines. Some hospital only masks don't have built in vents and anti-asphyxia valves and you could suffocate if you don't connect it with the proper external vent and valve. Because of this, they tend to very tightly control sales of "hospital only" masks to non-hospital user.

The RT040 does appear to have built in exhaust vent and anti-asphyxia valve. http://www.berner-ross.ru/uploads/files ... 40_Eng.pdf

Some hospital masks don't have these things and are dangerous.

I suspect the "disposable" nature of hospital masks would also make them bad for long term use.

This is exactly like the Fisher & Paykel FlexiFit #431 but with no valve. I wasted half a year of treatment by using it. Lots of leaks around the face seal. It does not use the double flap seal technology as most modern cushions do.

I have tried the 431, and have a 432. Both models have replaceable cushions.
The mask discussed cannot be separated from the cushion.
If the frame is soft, this might mean more fitting flexibility.
In any case, the integrated design may eliminate those horrible ridges.
