dental cream/fixadent on mouth works better than tape for me

I tried using the tape suggested here as I am mouth breathing at night and it just didn't work. It kept itching and when I pulled it off, slowly, my lips were raw. So I tried last night some fixadent - for dentures - thinking if that stuff can hold dentures to the gums when eating corn on the cob, it should hold my lips together. It worked, and it was really easy to get off this morning. Just fyi, thought the mustache crew may want to try it!

Tell us more?

How much?
How applied?
How removed?
How did it feel?

If you break the seal to take a sip of water or cough does it re-seal or do you re-apply?

As one of the 'stache crew I am interested in hearing more. I was a little claustrophobic with tape last night for the first time in 2.5 months.

okay, first night was last night so not a lot of info. so I put a line in between my lips, it was kind of goopy to start and I used like a full line as thick as would come out (figure more is better, who knows). And it was really mushy - I am not sure how long it takes to dry - I know I opened my mouth a few times before it 'dried' and that seemed to get it to dry faster - I wear a chin strap as well - so I start out with my mouth closed and usually 1-2 hours later will awake due to tape issues, trying to breathe thru my mouth - well with this stuff - 5 hours later, I woke up and it was kind of like - hmmmm 5 hours wow - then I tested my mouth as I didn't want to break the seal and it was pretty dried and tight - not uncomfortable in any way though - which was way cool - so went back to sleep, woke up again 3 hours later - time to get up and just splashed some water on my lips and rubbed the stuff off - kind of gooey but no pain at all! I think you would probably have to reapply if you open your mouth, but maybe not, maybe just moisten it with your tongue and press together again - I am not sure how strong the hold is, and I think tonight I will try to get it to dry faster in the beginning just in case - let me know your luck if you try it!!! Have a good day!

It never ceases to amaze me about the things we pap-ers think up to solve our various issues. I hope the people who get payed to invent and market pap related stuff cruise these boards for ideas. I know I would if it was my work responsiblity. I may pick up some of this next time I'm at the store. I tape, and do not have any trouble with it except for some leftover glue on my face in the a.m. I think this may solve this problem, as minor as it may be.

I wonder if it will work on my FF Mask, maybe I can do away with the headgear! I better not try it, I might not be able to pry the mask off in time for breakfast! Jim

Woozle - WOW - this is breaking news for me, as taping has become the #1 bad issue with me and CPAP.

My skin just won't hold up to taping - after 1 month (tomorrow) of CPAP I finally have figured out which mask works best for me, but I still sit on edge of bed for awhile "psyching up" to tape mouth. I have one of the Nose Breathe appliances ordered BUT if your idea works - WOW WOW WOW - what a simple fix.

I will try it tonight and report my results.

Woozle, you may have just taken the stress out of my papping days!!!

You're a jewel for taking time to report this!!

Excited to try it in Wyoming!!

Ellen

OK, friends, glue if you want to - but please, please try an emergency removal / mouth opening before you go to sleep with glued lips.

With a tape the folded in tabs let you tear it off quickly if you have too. Make sure that's true of the glue as well.

I think that if it adhered that tight people's false teeth would never come out and from my mother's complaints (many, many years ago unfortunately) that was never true.

I'm pretty sure (read it somewhere) your jaw muscles are some of the most powerful in your body relative to size. I guarantee that if I HAD to get my mouth open with taping or Fixadent, that those items would not impede me significantly. Having said that, I do appreciate your concern.

I have a front tooth/bridge that sometimes breaks (am 36 so not in denture years yet!) and when it breaks, I always use the fixadent to glue the broken tooth back until I get to the dentist - more info than you all probably wanted! but anyway, so had this stuff on hand, and it comes in a small size if you just want to try it - so I knew ahead of time that it is strong to a point with regards to adhesing - just fyi, when I went to 'unglue' my lips this morning - it wasnt' hard at all - there was resistance but not to where you couldn't undo it - it may not even work for some - but for me seems to be just enough stickiness to last the night - good luck!

A very clever and inventive idea, woozle, but let's all hope and pray that we don't start hearing from the "scare mongers" that this leads to "fixadent gastritis," or some other outlandish rubbish.

Looks pretty benign to me. If anyone else tries it, please report your results. I'm so sick of taping, I can barely stand to do it anymore.

I have been on CPAP since Jan. and have been visiting this site since. Have had problems with mouth breathing while trying several different chin straps. Woozle, your tip on the dental cream is the answer to my prayers. I tried it last night and it worked like a charm. No problem removing it this morning at all.
Thanks to everyone for all the help from this site.
