Dad's Data for 4/17, RERA Question
I was elated with Dad's data report from last night, but my Dad said he didn't really feel like he slept. I can't really figure out why, but I did notice that he had 12 RERA events. Would that contribute to making him feel like he didn't rest? Thank you, porete

Re: Dad's Data for 4/17, RERA Question
Yes, the RERAs could very well be to blame for a less restful night.
They are sort of indications of a little reduction in flow (not enough to be called some sore of apnea event) that likely cause an arousal from sleep. Most often we don't realize that there is that arousal because we don't remember it.
But a lot of them normally points to a restless night, especially when we see clusters of them.

Is there anything I can change in his machine settings to reduce the RERA's?Pugsy wrote:Yes, the RERAs could very well be to blame for a less restful night.

Re: Dad's Data for 4/17, RERA Question
A little more minimum pressure is what we would normally suggest if we saw RERAs and those snores on a consistent basis.
If they are rare occurrence I don't know if I would do anything. Probably only 0.5.
I suspect he was either on his back or in REM stage sleep when that happened.
Looking at the pattern I would guess REM sleep and/or maybe REM sleep when supine.
Definition from Respironics.
Respiratory Event Related Arousal... a sequence of breaths characterized by increasing respiratory effort leading to an arousal from sleep, but which does not meet criteria for an apnea or hypopnea.”
RERA Detection in the Respironics System One data..Respiratory effort-related arousal..defined as an arousal from sleep that follows a 10 second or longer sequence of breaths that are characterized by increasing respiratory effort, but which does not meet criteria for an apenea or hypopnea. Snoring, though usually associated with this condition need not be present. The RERA algorithm monitors for a sequence of breaths that exhibit both a subtle reduction in airflow and progressive flow limitation. If this breath sequence is terminated by a sudden increase in airflow along with the absence of flow limitation, and the event does not meet the conditions for an apnea or hypopnea, a RERA is indicated.

Re: Dad's Data for 4/17, RERA Question
Hi Pugsy,
His RERA events have been as follows for the past week. Do you think I should turn it up a 0.5 based on these results?
4/8 - 3 events
4/9 - 6 events
4/10 - 7 events
4/11 - 3 events
4/12 - 4 events
4/13 - 4 events
4/14 - 5 events
4/15 - 2 events

Re: Dad's Data for 4/17, RERA Question
His sleep is rather fragile anyway and any little thing is going to mess with how he feels.
I rarely have any RERAs at all. If I saw those on my reports with the snores and felt like crap...yeah, I would do a little 0.5 bump in the minimum.

VERY true. I'll see if he can tolerate the .5 bump, and see how he feels tomorrow.Pugsy wrote:His sleep is rather fragile anyway and any little thing is going to mess with how he feels.
