Have a banana and warm milk. I dunno why, but this often does the trick for me. However, waking up many times a night for me is the norm. Also, taking a B6 and Calcium/Magnesium a few hours before bed helps too.

There's another post about melatonin - would that help?

Doxylamine succinate, the ingredient in Unisome.

It is the strongest sleep antihistamine there is and it does not dry out your nose. Have a good 8 hours to spend on sleep because it will KNOCK YOU OUT. I used it before I was diagnosed with apnea - **I do not use it any longer because it tends to increase apnea events**. I have severe apnea - so after trying it with the increase, I opted out.

There is plenty of info on line on it, if you would like to research more. Hope this helps.

Cosmo, you may be trying to treat something that is normal. See this reference: http://www.sciencesleep.org/ziliao/The% ... 0sleep.pdf

I am convinced that there is NO OTC Rx that would help you fall asleep and keep you asleep like Benzodiazepine or Non Benzodiazepine.

For me, taking Alprazolam 0.5 mg ER (generic Xanax) and 300 mg of Gabapentin (generic Neurontin) daily in the early evening, is not enough. So when going to bed I take, in addition, 5 mg of Zolpidem (generic Ambien). This combination [only] let me sleep for 7 hours, even if I get up to pee up to 4 times a night.
One of my 10 Docs (a psychiatrist) does not like to prescribe Zolpidem, but another Doc (internist geriatric) likes to. It has to do with this Rx short life time cycle. Zolpidem is known to help OSA and CSA sufferers fall asleep. Doctors have financial interest to hook you on a certain sleep Rx or to avoid them, but want to see you regularly in either case.

Taking Dr Ruth Westheimer's advice helps many people sleep.

50mg still didn't keep me asleep. I'll continue for a few days before trying something stronger

Only four short awakenings? (+/- 10 min each.)
If this is a big deal, I'm in trouble.

Cosmo, again I'll say you may be trying to treat something that is normal. Some wake-ups during the night are normal. Your Zeo reports look great. In fact, to me the one without meds looks as good or better than the ones with. Seems to me, unless your a teen-ager, 9 hours sleep is a little on the long side. Maybe, instead of taking something to get more sleep, you should try getting a little less? Also, keep in mind that Zeo sometimes has difficulty distinguishing between REM and Wake so you may not actually be awake as much as reported - which really isn't too much, in my opinion. Zeo reports the average wake time for someone in their 30's to be 21 minutes.
Further, the half life of diphenhydramine is 8.5 hours, which could easily produce grogginess the next morning http://www.nhtsa.gov/people/injury/rese ... ramine.htm
I'm just sayin'
Jay

What are you trying to achieve, zero wake ups and zero AHI. When you start messing around with mixing drugs even OTC you just might achieve it permanently. You have an AHI that we all would love to have.

cosmo wrote:Does anyone recommend anything over the counter I can buy to keep me from waking up? I can fall asleep within minutes and when I do wake up, I can fall back asleep fast. I just need something to keep me from waking up.

Also, would they leave me with residue effects the next morning? Would they have an effect on sleep stages?

This would only be temporary as I am already making lifestyle changes and adjustments. The waking up is not due to cpap treatment.
i don't know of anything over the counter but there is a sleep medicine you can take in the middle of the night. it's called intermezzo.
