Newbie...question on CPAP vs Bipap

Post by fishy » Mon Nov 26, 2012 9:45 pm

Hey all:
I was told that whichever machine I get should store data - check
My next question is whether there is a consensus as to whether normal cpap vs. apap vs bipap, etc is superior? I've seen machines with C-flex which is also supposed to adjust the pressure during exhalation...is there a consensus winner?

From what I have learned, the typ of machine you need is different for each person, depending on the type and severity of the apnea. I have Severe Obstructive and Central sleep apnea, so I require an ASV, for example. A straight cpap machine would not help my central apneas. Hope that helps... Kat

Usually they bill by medical codes. In the US, CPAP and APAP fall under them same billing code. C-flex/EPR is a feature most of them have.

To get BiPAP/VPAP, you need a prescription for it. Finally, to get an ASV is yet a third code.

If you have a standard OSA prescription, usually getting an auto machine with full data is a good idea. It gives you options and data to check how things are going.

Unfortunately, there's no right or wrong answer on this. The responses you've gotten so far are right on point.

For some people, bipap is much more comfortable. Others, the changing pressures is a disturbance and thus a hindrance to sound sleeping.

For me, bipap is much better, but my husband doesn't like it, preferring a more constant pressure.

I was prescribed a bipap and I'm so glad! If the choice is between CPAP and APAP I'd definitely try to get the APAP. The APAP can always be run in CPAP mode, but not the other way around.
