Convincing someone to upgrade their brick

Post by DiverCTHunter » Thu Apr 19, 2012 11:30 am

So,

Since I've started educating myself, I've discovered that my set-in-his-ways father's been using the same brick (ResMed S7) for at least 4 years, and I'm trying to figure out how to convince him to move up to either an S9 or a PR1.

Any thoughts.

When in doubt, open the case. Remember: If you can't open it, you don't own it!

Prescribed APAP range - 6-10 cm/H2O, titrated at 8.
Current range - 9.0-11.5 cm/H2O - still searching for the magic "zero night" but averaging 2.2 AHI

Insurance or Medicare generally won't cover a new machine for 5 years.
In the meantime, you can find better stuff on CL if you are careful.

If he is having difficulties or seeing symptoms of his treatment maybe not being thoroughly effective, you'll have a better chance of convincing him. If he's one whose prescribed pressure is working for him and there's no problems, I can understand him not feeling the need. I have friends who are perfectly content to let things remain the same because they feel good and see no need to rock the boat, and I don't disagree. Since he is a family member, you've got an inside track to observe for any inroads to making him aware if there's a need that he may not be in tune to. Is there a concern that he needs his treatment improved?

Sell it like a new car. Bells and whistles! Fancy displays, runs quieter, heated hose.

He's clearly not interested in the data, so don't expect to convince him on that score. But you can show him your fancy printouts if he's geeky at all.

And don't get too wrapped up in this. It's his life, not yours.

Hubby didn't want a machine at all.
Once he realized he needed it, nothing but the ultimate package would do.

Ain't this often the way of it! Mine was the same way. So I approached it as a new electronic toy, not a piece of medical equipment. Suddenly the specs became so much more interesting!

I downloaded the software and asked him to help me figure it out. BAM!

That could scare the hay out of those who are happy with bricks.

Let him use yours to see how his therapy IS working. Then take it from there.

I went thru this with my dad too. IF he's still got a rotary phone on the wall - he's NOT interested in bells, whistles, or data.

This is like walking in the dark. Tell us more about dad?

He's a video producer / director / corporate media / advertising supervisor. When it comes to work related tech, he's all over it. At home though, he'd much rather make someone else do the scutwork of researching / setting things up.

Example: Bought an upper-middle-end Yamaha surround receiver w/ a combo of older Bose and Harman-Karon speakers, but waited for me to come over to run the room acoustics calibration.

I like JanKits and Chunkyfrog's suggestions. BTW, I'm pretty sure it's older than 4 years, but I'd have to wait until the next time I'm over at his place.

I would show him what the new one can do that his old one can't. Once you have done that if his is working and the therapy is making him happy and healthy let it be.

If it ain't broke, why fix it? Just because it has got more bells and whistles is no reason to upgrade as far as I am concerned. If it is highly likely to die on me one night because it is 4-5 years old, if the insurance will pay for it I can see good reason to upgrade. I do have a machine that gives me my daily info (thanks to JediMark's SleepyHead software), so I am not in quite the same position as your Dad, but the potential for being without treatment when the machine fails does scare me a bit!

Everyone who has successful, effective therapy needs or wants a backup (in the next room).

Me? I just can't hold my breath that long any longer

IF you are planning on your DME or insurance to care (or help) on a long weekend - when it will break - then your therapy is not effective AND you need your head examined.

Remember - promises are made to be broken.
