I have been on CPAP for about 2the weeks. Had a stroke in September 2011 at which time I weighed about 204. DR. told me to loose 40 pounds. I had lost about 18 when I got the machine. I've gained 2 pounds back so far.

Prior to CPAP I would get up on average 3-4sized times per night to go to the bathroom. I now get up only 1had time. I had read that nite time urination was a result of my sleep problems. The heart was actually enlarging as it worked harder. Your system thinks it has too much fluid and signals the body to produce urine as a way of balancing your fluid level. If what I have read is accurate, my weight gain may be due to the extra fluid my body is no longer getting rid of.

TDN, I'm not a doctor or a medical professional, but the way I have heard it explained is the the sleep apnea does a lot of things to the body, and one of them can be increased BP. One cause for increased BP is increased fluid in the blood stream. I have hypertension an one of the medications that my doctor has me on that works very effectively for me is a water pill that eliminates some of this fluid from the blood stream.

I believe the reason you are only getting up once a night now is because that BP has settled a bit and your body is not building fluid in the bloodstream.

As for why have I gained 20 lbs in 100+ days, well, I am lucky that I have a digital scale that records my weight recordings. I plotted these out for the last 12 months, and I see about a month prior to starting CPAP I was actually on the uptick in weight. I think part of this might be due to my change in what I have for breakfast. You see, about that time we got a new cook at work in the kitchen who makes these killer omelets. Well, I started having an omelet each morning with two servings of bacon... yes, not the most health breakfast and I am sure it has contributed significantly to the weight gain. So, for 2012, I am eliminating those from my diet.

I also asked my physician who prescribed the CPAP about the weight gain and he stated that most people will lose weight. He stated that this is in part because they now have more energy and become a bit more active. I'm sure there are other reasons for the weight loss too.

So, I guess one thing I would look at is what might have also changed in the two weeks? Has your activity level changed, diet change, something else?

Best wishes....John

You are posting on December 28 that you gained 2 lbs. Considering what most eat during the Christmas season, I will say you are doing damn well.

Plan on gaining another 2 lbs over New Year weekend and then losing 4 lbs during the first two weeks of January should not be much of a problem. Continue on from there.

Yeah I gained weight! I have other medical problems including other sleep disorders, though. I walk and ride my bike a lot. I do it even when I'm dead tired, I push myself. Sometimes I end up asleep on the side of the road, but I'd probably be obese if I didn't. Plus driving is a bit too dangerous for me, but I guess I could take the bus everywhere but I prefer to get the fresh air and exercise. I crave carbs like mad, especially this time of year (winter where I am). I eat tons of things like that cookies, cakes, candy bars etc. They have massive amounts of calories and I'm perhaps slightly overweight, if not just the top end of the healthy range, not obese. Maybe it depends too on genetics and metabolism, but I think all the walking and biking has a little something to do with it as well.

I just went to see my sleep doctor yesterday and my weight was the major topic of discussion. I've gained 10 pounds in three months.

I had been gaining weight annually for many years now, but this is way too quick and it appears to have started since I've been on XPAP. I feel this trend is basically a death sentence.

As many have noted and my doctor reiterated, it is not at all uncommon for people to lose weight while in XPAP because of the increase in energy levels. But this has not been the case for me.

The only true way to lose weight is "eat right and exercise". That's it. It is a simple formula. The issue for me, as with much of the obese population, is time and energy.

Perhaps you should be tested for other health conditions or sleep disorders. I have narcolepsy as well and it causes a lot of fatigue and sleepiness where I expected the CPAP to solve everything. Sometimes though I think I feel tired because I'm bored and if I go out and walk or bike I feel more energetic than I thought I would.

Don't forget "sleep" in the equation. There is something going on about inadequate or poor quality sleep causing weight gain.

Mr. Noboby's craving of carbs may well be due to his sleep problems.

Kudos to you fine sir! Love the outdoor air and exercise myself. (Love the sweaty air in the gym also.)

I pray you get adequate medical attention for your sleep problems and quick resolution.

I have a doctor, a sleep specialist. He's an awesome guy! It's more me than any inadequate medical treatment. I hate taking meds and the ones for treating narcolepsy are harsh to say the least, I don't tolerate them well. I'm just doing the best I can

This is a very bad time of the year for carbs.
People go to so much effort to make them irresistible.

Hey Dave... could it be that you like beer and you have a liquid grain repository growing around your abdomen?

I remember when I was drinking, I was about 195lbs. I quit and about a year later I was down about 20 lbs. Now, after all then dumb omelets, I seem to have put it all back on.

I like beer, but I don't drink that often. Maybe one beer per week or so. On occasion, I may drink two.

My first year on cpap, I lost 8 pounds with no other changes to my habits.
Since then, I've lost an additional 35 or so and kept most of it off going with healthier diet and staying low carb.
(this last week not so well) I expect to be eating a lot of raw produce next month. . .
I need to burn/shred my 'fat' clothes--never want to wear that ugly crap again!

Yes - My roommate made traditional Quebecois sugar pie. Carbs and sugar in a really really good tasting format. It is finally all gone and so are the cookies, chocolates and the cake.

I feel bloated.
