Device you get from Dentist
Device you get from Dentist
Have any of you heard of this? If so, what are your thoughts?
I've heard it's MUCH easier to use. A friend told me about it... said it's much easier to deal with... just lowers your jaw a bit so that air gets in, or something like that. I have SOSA.
Thanks

Only works if that is what your problem is.ems wrote:Have any of you heard of this? If so, what are your thoughts?

They cost thousands of dollars and most people that have it done are not happy with it. Many need CPAP besides the dental device. You can search 'dental appliance' or 'dental device' and see what people have to say about them.

Thousands of dollars??? That's plain crazy. It's just a tiny, little thing... so I've heard anyway.

What is SOSA?
Dental appliances are great if they work. I think the success rate is pretty low as an apnea treatment. And you're out the money either way.
Some people cure their apnea if they change their sleeping position, change pillows, don't use a pillow, etc. It's great if it works.
It's a bit like taking vitamin A for blindness. If you have blindness from vitamin A deficiency, it's a miracle cure. If your blindness is from something else, it doesn't help. Of course, vitamin A is a lot cheaper than a dental device, and no one's got a big financial incentive to sell you vitamin A.

Of course, Vitamin A is very toxic in large amounts--not that it is relevant to this thread.

They have to make a mold of your mouth and then create the object to do what it needs to do. However it the problem in further down your throat it is useless.

Actually, it's very relevant. Some people think "Vitamin A deficiency causes eye problems. Therefore, I'll take megadoses of vitamin A and cure my cataracts." Not only does it not work, it's toxic. Overdoses of vitamin A are particularly dangerous to your health vs. other vitamins.chunkyfrog wrote:Of course, Vitamin A is very toxic in large amounts--not that it is relevant to this thread.
If a little is good, too much is just right.

Re: Device you get from Dentist
My dental device (admittedly a cheapie bought on TV) keeps me from snoring. As to my hypopneas....haven't seen the full report yet to see how I slept with it in. Only know that without it my AHI is 46, hence my journey into c-pap land.

Thanks for all your responses. Appreciated the link, Mike.
I thought the dental device was used in place of CPAP... obviously I was wrong. Think I'll stick with my mask and continue trying to get comfortable with it. I doubt I need both, since the sleep center seems to think I'm doing okay. I have a doctor appointment 8/10, and I'm anxious to hear what she has to say.

Re: Device you get from Dentist
If you do a forum search on the Aveo TSD, there is a thread by a member who was selling his S9 because the device worked for him. I think they are $129.

Re: Device you get from Dentist
I discussed this with my dentist recently. She said that the dental appliances only work for a few people. She asks the sleep specialists to determine if moving the jaw forward slightly is likely to help before she'll make an appliance. When I asked her about TMJ problems, she said that if you don't have trouble with your TMJ to begin with, the appliance probably won't bother the joint too much, but if your TMJ bothers you already, the appliance can make it a lot worse.
