Dropping Acid

Post by VVV » Tue Jul 05, 2011 5:17 pm

No, not that kind of acid. The kind that is involved in acid reflux. I know many of us have problems with acid reflux and this article says 20% of adults have GERD.

There are some others threads in progress about low carb diets and having no fear of eating fats. But this article leads me to believe at least my evening meal should be low fat. What do you think?
Koufman has invested $200,000 in publishing “Dropping Acid: The Reflux Diet Cookbook & Cure.” She worked with Dr. Jordan Stern, an acid-reflux specialist and founder of the sleep-disorders center BlueSleep, and Marc Bauer, a master chef at New York’s French Culinary Institute.

The book’s 75 recipes support the message that people should avoid fatty and acidic foods such as chocolate, carbonated beverages, deep fried foods, ribs and coffee. They should instead favor foods such as bananas, grilled or steamed chicken, egg whites and raw or cooked vegetables.

“The diet is a good idea,” Dr. Roy K.H. Wong, the integrated chief of gastroenterology at Walter Reed Army-Navy Medical Center and a professor of medicine, said by phone. “Whenever you eat fatty substances, they stay in the stomach for a longer period of time, and the fat slows down the emptying of the stomach.”

A search on cpaptalk.com of "acid reflux" returns 1300 posts and "gerd" returns over 3000 posts.

I think I will stay here with the other CPAPers discussing acid reflux.

Ya got me with the title, I had a flashback.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

favor foods such as bananas,
Bananas are very very acidic. It is the first thing they warn you about when you get an ulcer. Eating one is like getting kicked in the stomach.

Just by this phrase I dub the book a big huge failure and will doubt anything in this.

I had Acid Reflux for years, I could not eat anything without suffering at night, I was drinking Mylanta like water. It all went away my first night on CPAP and hasn't been back, it has now been a year.

Researching acid reflux and gerd, led me to UARS, which led me to demand a sleep study.
I was having strange stomach issues (pain) that my dr insisted was heart burn, gerd... and he had a pill for that!
I had adjusted my diet, raised the head of my bed... and I don't do meds. Always have noticeable side effects.
Got my APAP and those symptoms went away.
I typically don't eat late since being on low carb. Eating more fat satisfies me and I don't graze anymore, especially in the evenings. I'm finding I have to make myself eat, so I started logging into Fitday.com, and it turns out the 2 meals a day and snacks are about right calorie & protein wise. If I eat more it doesn't matter, but I'm not hungry in the evening. So, my sleep hygiene is better this way.

Well Google returns plenty of hits that say bananas prevent acid reflux and a few that say it causes acid reflux.
Bananas have long been known as a healthy fruit. People who suffer from heartburn and GERD have noticed that a banana before and/or after a meal often helps prevent heartburn. Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, as well as apples, so you might try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Recently, we recieved this unsolocited letter from a reader who has used bananas to relieve her heartburn:

I just found out that Bananas stop heartburn! It is the one fruit that counteracts stomach acid. I tried to see if this was true, as I have GERD! My stomach was really acting up the last 3 days and I thought I would try and eat Bananas. After I ate dinner, my heartburn was really bad. I ate One Banana and within 15 minutes, the heartburn stopped! I am not kidding! It is wonderful! I am eating a banana before and after I eat. Give it a try and let us know here on the forum how it worked for you! This is incredible. Apples are the other fruit that counteracts acids, but not as good as bananas.

Q. I have suffered with GERD (acid reflux) for several years. One night when dealing with a bad session, I ate a banana. I have no idea why; I certainly didn’t expect any result. Within 30 minutes I was able to go back to sleep.

Since then, whenever a bad episode of heartburn occurs I eat one or two bites of banana and the problem goes away. Doctors have no explanation for this. Nonetheless, it works every time and it’s not a drug. We almost always have a banana in the house.

A. We’re not surprised that you have found bananas helpful. Doctors in India have prescribed bananas or banana powder to treat indigestion and stomach upset from aspirin. According to a study published long ago in The Lancet (March 10, 1990), banana powder relieved indigestion in 75 percent of patients.
Banana powder? Yechh!

It also looks like bananas were quite a popular sleep apnea treatment a couple of years ago on cpaptalk - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=40884&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=banana

That's a scary, scary thought: LSD + CPAP. No one wants to discover that he's become a man-machine mutant with a hose growing out of his face when he's under the influence of a Class A hallucinogen.

When I had my machine set wrong, I was getting terrible GERD like symptoms. Prilosec and similar drugs only helped a little. I think that if you're refluxing enough, stomach contents are still not good for your esophagus even if you eliminate all the acid. (Note that they now say "reflux" not "acid reflux.")

When I fixed my pressure setting, the problems went away overnight.

I controlled GERDS only checking what I eat at supper and the time of the last thing I take before going to bed.

No greasy food, no hard to digest food at supper time; no solid food before 3 hour to go to bed. I can take some fruit 1/2 an hour before bed or some milk right before bed.

I was prescribed pills to diminished the acid production in the stomach, that was terrible I had more difficulty to digest than ever before. The Dr. had told me to go to internet and check what to do to control GERDS without medication, I did it and today I don't need any medication for it.

If I feel I haven't digest or I have a hard time to do it I simply take 2 spoons of apple cider vinegar in 4 spoons of water and that's it problem solved. I didn't believe vinegar could help with acid feeling in the stomach but one reason we feel like burping acid is because the food is not digested. To digest we need to have a certain level of acid in the stomach other way the stomach don't produce enough PEPTIN to digest the food and the trouble starts.

This is not the solution for every one but it works for me. On top of that if I have GERDS in the night my AHI is terrible that day. Dr. explained me when you have a reflux the throat closes to forbid acid going into the lungs and that produces an apnea; the same thing can repeats a number of times in the night so you finish with a bad AHI and the pressure increases causing you to make more reflux/GERDS.

I suggest you to survey your diet and hour of food intake and you will be able to determine if it's a solution for you.

That was a flashback for me too. I had a gallon of sulfuric acid in a 5 gallon glass jar, that needed to be diluted. I knew better than to add water to it, but the jar was 1/2 inch thick, so take a chance go slow. Failed broke the glass jar the ground smoked for hours. I did find out a new way to cut a glass jar.
