An alternative to chinstraps is a foam cervical collar which works wonders for me. I voted "Other" in the poll.

I couldn't get any chinstrap to work for me. Tried the Pap-Cap, PureSom Ruby, ResMed adjustable, and a few home made contraptions. All of them pull my chin back and require too much snugness to be both effective and comfortable for me.

With the foam collar, I sleep supine with my pillow adjusted to prop my head a bit forward so my chin rests on the collar. I also use an elastic cloth headband (a sports terry cloth sweat-band) fitted around my neck and across my lips to prevent my lips from blowing outward. All this together does look awkward, but it's very comfortable. I've adjusted everything to be as loose fitting as possible and still maintain a pressure seal. I'm as happy as a clam and I kinda look like one with all that strapped on.

I had some mouth leaks when I first started with the nasal pillows but kept trying and within a month managed to "train" myself to keep my mouth shut.

I think taping your mouth is only a danger if you are relatively helpless, say a fragile older person or a person who has recently had a stroke. Otherwise, most normal people would simply wake up because they can't breathe and pull the tape off.
