OT: Minneapolis Metrodome roof collapses from heavy snow

Post by Slinky » Sun Dec 12, 2010 8:20 am

Didn't the Minneapolis Metrodome roof collapse once before? Back in the 1970's?? Or is this an entirely new structure?

This is the old Metrodome....Vikings have considered moving to the West Coast, but, it problibly will not happen. Bret Favre is happy.....now he gets a few more days to heal so he can continue his streak of starts.

Yes, it did collapse once before, I think shortly after it was constructed. They have cancelled the game until tomorrow night. Although that may have changed, because when they were saying that, the roof had not collapsed and they were clearing snow from it. The Vikings do want a new stadium and have for awhile. I think they need to do better playing before they get a new stadium. They have done much better with the new coach, just need to get rid of Favre. Just an opinion from a Viking's fan.

The Metrodome roof has failed three times before. It deflated in
1981, 1982 and 1983, each time due to tears caused by heavy snow.

I just saw that on the news. A friend of mine (who can travel at little expense due to working for an airline) took her granddaughter to the Mall of America for her birthday this weekend. What timing! I doubt they'll make it back to Ohio today as planned.

Yikes! I didn't realize it had collapsed 4 times.

Should this really be described as off topic? The Metrodome is a lot like CPAP. Air pumps are used to increase the internal pressure to the point that the roof of the stadium/throat doesn't collapse. One difference is that the Metrodome only uses about 2.5 cm-H2O of pressure, way less than I do, although its flow generator is capable of 7.5 cm-H2O. Obviously Minnesota should have held out for an APAP stadium that would have adjusted automatically to the pressure needs of a snowy environment.

Any landing you walk away from is a good one; if you don't break your airplane it's excellent.
