F&P Icon Auto, early review and request for clin. manual

Post by Moby » Sat Sep 04, 2010 5:21 am

Yesterday I hired an F&P auto from my sleep clinic.

ttp://www.sleepguide.com/forum/topics/icon-au ... her-paykel
http://www.sleepnz.co.nz/cart_product11 ... con%20Auto

Overall, 99/100 for convenience and 100/100 for performance.

pros (after one night)

a) The hard case protects the contents very well.

b)It looks like a clock, and is a clock! Most people would probably appreciate the MP3 feature which means you can wake up to your choice of music.

c)The machine is quiet as.

d) I slept really well. Particularly enjoyed the "SensAwake" feature which meant I was not awakened by hissing mask or the (rather aged) tube popping off the mask. I hadn't realised how often that happened in the night.

e) The breathing technology was very gentle.

f) The heated tube worked, though I was doubtful as it is thin and has no hose cover, unlike my beloved Aussie hose. I did keep it in bed with me.

g) The humidifier is large and did not empty even though I returned to bed for several hours sleep during the day before checking it.

Cons

h) The case is bulky, and the whole (case + machine) seemed heavy compared to my Resmed S8 in its soft case. However, the shoulder strap was not provided.

i) Closing the humidifier lid was a challenge last night last night, especially frustrating as my husband was already going to sleep. You have to get it correctly lined up, pressed down and then twist. Once done right, it works like a brilliant dream.

j) I found it difficult to remove the humidifier lid after use. Maybe especially as it was well depleted after very long use. It felt as though I was struggling against a vacuum.

I hope these difficulties resolve as I get used to it.

I love this machine already.

Does anyone have access to the clinicians manual for this great machine?

How does it stack up against your S8? I was thinking about getting an S9 then saw the info about the Icon and decided to wait. I'm hoping to see some comparisons.

Re: F&P Icon Auto, v Resmed S8

Hi Mimi7grands,

Pros: The quality of sleep I get seems much better, though the S8 was very good too.

My mask is more comfortable and doesn't play up as much. I don't have to keep moving the bedcovers away from the mask because of "whooshing".

I think it is quieter.

The humidifier is machine washable.

The Icon auto's built in humidifier is large and works better for me. The S8 was too small, so was the F&P freestander

There seems to be less leakage round the mask and the connections between mask and hose. This may be because of the "SensAwake" feature.

The decreased leakage prob. contributes to the increased efficiency of the humidifier.

The hose is more flexible than my Ozzie hose, and doesn't kink.

The hose connects to the machine at a more convenient angle, meaning no extra connections to prevent the tube from kinking (The machine is on a lower shelf to keep it below pillow height).

There is less clutter on the nightstand as there is no need for a clock (and for me no need for a stand alone humidifier).

Cons:
I havent got the instruction book, and the controls are not intuitive. I'm sure they're simple. (I should have paid more attention to the tec when she showed me).

It is more difficult to carry, and I have to move it very carefully into and out of position to tend to the humidifier. If i get one, I'll have to change my bedside cabinet arrangement (again)!

Husband notices no difference in noise levels, except if the humidifier needs opening/closing. I found that a difficult and noisy operation, but that might be just me. I have arthrities in my thumbs and fingers which doesn't help.

Opening and closing the humidifier was very difficult for me,but i expect that to get easier. Or I could get hubby to do it if it stays difficult.

I'm curious about the SensAwake feature. My understanding is that it will reduce the pressure when you are awake. Does it still give you enough pressure so that you don't feel like you are suffocating?

Hi Janknitz.

No, it just feels comfortable.

Before I realised I hadn't got the humidifier on right the pressure was uncomfortably low. But once I had everything set up right, no problem!

The best thing is that it doesn't blow my mask off while I"m trying to get to sleep or if I wake up to turn over in the night.

I really don't want to give it back, but hubby not happy about big $$$$$$$$ expenditure if the Resmed is fixable.

Di

update: easier

Just an update to report I'm finding it much easier to open and close the humidifier now.

No one has any a manual or any clinical instructions?

Di

another update

Post by Moby » Tue Sep 28, 2010 9:52 pm

The humidifier:

Yesterday I noticed the silicone seal round the top extending to the vents of the humidifier had come loose at one of the vents. It was impossible to fit back in properly.
That would account for the difficulty fitting the lid.

You folks have software so you can track your results? If not, why would you want something that expensive that wouldn't tell you how you are doing with it?

Lucky you, Lullaby - most folks in the US haven't been as fortunate. I guess you saw my point?

I simply downloaded the Infosmart software and it was free. The software should be more easily available for patients however it's not that hard to find.

Mind you, I don't use the Icon. But there have been a number of posters in the last several months with Icons posting about not being able to find the Infosmart software. Care to provide a link to where you found it?

Was it a torrent site? And if so, were the install instructions sufficient to insure a smooth install?

Thanks

Hi robysue,

Yep, it was from a torrent site. The instructions that came with the download were spot on. In fact, someone else posted these instructions in another thread on this forum in the last few days. The only slightly tricky thing was trying to register the software with f&P as the link to where to register was wrong. Took me about 10 minutes to find the right web address so all was good. Happy to help if you need anymore info.

I agree with many others here that this software should be freely available however i've never understood why so many people are saying that this software is 'impossible' to find. You just need to do some research.
